of forty-six years. His son, mission ary Reuben Archer Torrey, III, of Korea, is following in the train of his eminent father and grandfather, as are the two daughters. The Reniches had to leave China be cause of the Communists and the Johnsons were missionaries in Ja pan 13 years. Reuben A. Torrey, Jr. was born in Minneapolis, Minn. September 26, 1887, and saved at an early age; he was baptized by his father at the age of 12. When but a teen ager, he selected as his life verse Luke 22:42: “ . . . Not my will, but Thine, be done,” which had pro phetic implications. Later he added Romans 8:28 which had equal force and application to his strenuous life and ministry. At Princeton Theological Semi nary, he sat under the teaching of the outstanding defender of the faith, Dr. Warfield. In 1913 he mar ried Janet Slade Mallary and they sailed to China for their honey moon, in response to the urgent call for missionary evangel i st s. There five children were born to them, one son dying in infancy. Al though he had longed to go to Korea, Dr. Torrey had a fantastic ministry in North China. From pio neer itinerant evangelism in the villages, he went on to establish Bible classes, training schools for pastors and evangelists, and wit nessed the growth of the work into scores of churches with ten thou sand believers.

fornia, on February 23, 1970, at the age of 82, went home to be with the Lord. He is survived by his wife, Janet; daughters, Mrs. Fred C. Renich and Mrs. Glen M. Johnson; sons, Rev. Reuben Archer Torrey ill of Korea and Lorraine M. Tor rey. In addition, there are thirteen grandchildren. At the Memor i a l Service in the Monrovia Colonial Chapel of the Foothills, February 28th, the officiating ministers were Dr. J. Christy Wilson, Dr. Wilbur M. Smith, and son-in-law, Rev. Fred C. Renich. While friends, relatives and the numerous “ spiritual children" of Dr. Torrey rejoice that he now is experiencing fulness of joy in the Lord's presence, his absence leaves a great void in their hearts. It can be said of him as of one in the long ago, “ he was a faithful and beloved brother.” The name of Torrey is particu larly dear to BIOLA since Dr. Reu ben A. Torrey, Sr., world-renowned evangelist and Bible teacher, was its first Dean, and the first pastor of the Church of the Open Door, then the auditorium of the school. His influence reaches down to the present day and each year the Tor rey Memorial Conference is held at the campus in his honor. Dr. Reuben A. Torrey, Jr., had an outstanding career in Christian service in his own right, at home and abroad, extending over a period
