AFTER THE TASSEL IS MOVED

In 1941 the Torreys and their youngest son were interned by the Japanese until 1942 when they re turned to the U.S. on the Grip- sholm. In 1949 Dr. Torrey went back to China to serve as liaison officer between the Chinese and U.S. military forces, for which he was awarded the second highest Chinese military decoration. Then occurred an accident which would have ended the service of most men. In a collision between trucks, Dr. Torrey’s right arm was crushed between two vehicles. He wrote: “ I realized I would be maimed for life but as Romans 8:28 flashed into my mind, I knew this was one of the 'all things’ that God would use. . . . The conviction came to me that it did not matter what hap pened to a man; it was what he did with it that counted. . . .A series of miracles saved my life, culminat ing in the arrival of a plane to fly me to the hospital. . . . The arm was amputated and after a long recovery, I actually was back in China, responsible for using the Restoration Funds to restore the [Presbyterian] work and properties that had been wrecked during the war. Seven years passed and when we were ready for retirement to America, a call came to start a Ko rean Amputee Rehabilitation Pro gram to help the thirty thousands in Korea who had lost their limbs as a result of the war. I felt I must respond. . . . More miracles began to reveal God's purpose. Money was given to erect buildings; mate rials were donated by the Army and government sources, and needed personnel were brought together. Three mission hosp i t a l s opened their doors . . . and a fourth cen ter for complete rehabilitation was developed in Taejon in the center of South Korea, accessible to all parts of the country. . . . During the seven years that I was directing this program, more than 4,500 of these unfortunate men, women and children were cared for. A large pro portion became Ch r i s t i ans and went back to their villages as wit nesses to the love of Christ, some even e s t ab l i sh i ng chur ches in MAY, 1970
