Alternatives to Using Plastic Bags to Line Your Kitchen Bin Single use plastic bags have been legislated against and, while changing our habits can be challenging, it’s certainly nice to see fellow shoppers carrying bright and breezy fabric bags or hemp bags, or even old-school woven baskets! Even though plastic bags didn’t even exist before the 1960s, many of us have become quite dependent on using those single use plastic supermarket bags to line their kitchen bins, so... what now? If you search ‘alternatives to plastic bags’ in your chosen search engine, you’ll find a myriad of options, but here are just a few thoughts: Try paper bags (preferably with as high a recycle content as possible) Try folding your newspapers to line your bin; online you’ll find instructions for a few ways to do this If you purchase bulk goods like rice, flour or pet food in large bags, use them Purchase bin liners from the supermarket; there are options available that are degradable or compostable, generally made from corn starch Go naked! Do you really need a bin liner? Most pull out kitchen bins have multiple buckets so you can easily separate food scraps from recyclables. You can then take recyclables to your outdoor recyclables bin, put food scraps on your compost heap (or feed the chooks, or give them to a neighbour for their compost). And, by the way, the buckets in Tanova pull out kitchen bins have a very smooth inside surface so they’re easy to wipe out.
Useful Tips & Info Paper and cardboard: Recycling is better than composting, and composting is better than landfill. Shop-bought bin liners: What do the labels mean? Bio-based, plant-based, corn-starch or PLA: Bags are made from plants, not fossil fuels, but they are still plastic. Certified compostable: Bags will break down in hot composting conditions (this is not the same as breaking down in the environment or in landfills). Certified home compostable: Bags will break down in a home compost bin. No compostable plastic breaks down in the marine environment. Oxo-degradable and oxo-biodegradable: Bags are made from fossil fuels and have an additive that makes them break down quickly, but they break down into microplastic and are generally considered worse than standard plastic bags. No access to composting? Worried about food scraps getting smelly? Keep them in the freezer until rubbish day!
Drawer Type The drawer type allows access to bins with a single action and is the most popular type of system. The front panel is mounted directly onto a very strong carriage that opens like a drawer. Handle Type Mounted behind a hinged door, this model requires an extra 10mm in width and top hinge needs to be a minimum of 150mm from top of the cupboard door (unless sufficient clearance is made for the hinge).

Rear Bucket Clearance Most Tanova models provide a minimum of 55mm clearance from front of cabinet to back of rear bucket/basket. Many models provide a greater clearance.
