ISSUE 119 - MAY/JUNE 2024

Information, innovation and inspiration to take your business to the next level As this magazine goes to print, the KMP team is hitting the road for Limerick, where PLUMBEX is heading for the first time. Already well established in Dublin and Belfast, the two-day Limerick event marks the trade show’s first time in the Midwest of Ireland. We’re looking forward to catching up with many of our readers, and hope you find the show to be a great resource of information, innovation and inspiration to take your business to the next level. And hopefully our May/June edition will serve the same purpose, with our features including Boilers, Pipes, Valves & Fittings and Pumps & Circulators.

Energy efficiency is, of course, a unifying factor spanning the latest product launches and much of the news in this edition from OFTEC calling for greater support for biofuels to NICEIC urging heating and plumbing engineers in Northern Ireland to upskill in low- carbon energy solutions. While NI is playing catch up to a more mature renewables market in the Republic of Ireland, solutions providers across the island of Ireland are investing in their premises and people to boost their offer from Greenline Plumbing Supplies in Carrick-on Shannon and Heat Merchants Dundalk to Bassetts Newry and MR Mechanical Services in Warrenpoint.

Mark McManus, STIEBEL ELTRON Ireland Managing Director.

A NEW REGIONAL HQ IN BLANCHARDSTOWN WILL SHOWCASE STIEBEL ELTRON’S RANGE OF HEAT PUMPS, ELECTRIC HOT WATER, SPACE HEATING AND VENTILATION PRODUCTS, AND EXTEND ITS UNIQUE TRAINING PROVISION TO INSTALLERS ACROSS THE ISLAND OF IRELAND… Supporting an even greener future for the Emerald Isle

A leading supplier of sustainable heating products has set up shop in Dublin. STIEBEL ELTRON, a German group with 26 sales operations around the world, has marked its 100th anniversary with the opening of new regional headquarters in Blanchardstown. With 50 years of experience in heat pump technology, and a wide range of electric hot water, space heating and ventilation products, the firm is aiming to support homes and businesses across the island of Ireland in their transition to net zero. The new headquarters include a showroom open to the public, and a training centre offering a unique service provision upskilling installers in the

burgeoning renewables sector. Mark McManus, STIEBEL ELTRON Ireland Managing Director, said, “The Irish markets hold huge opportunity for renewable energy technologies, so developing an office which will support this sector was a no brainer. “At STIEBEL ELTRON we have a track record in creating and supplying tried and tested innovative renewable energy products to a global market, as well as being a leader in sharing our expertise to drive these green solutions forward. “We want to offer an excellent service to end-customers and installers, and if there are installers out there who are thinking they would like to recognise the opportunities, we’re here to help

them get into the sector and train them up.” Greatest interest in its heat pump solutions is initially expected to come from the Republic of Ireland market, where grants and subsidies are already available. In Northern Ireland, meanwhile, STIEBEL ELTRON is seeing strong uptake of its electric heating products, with notable success in the student accommodation sector including a current project in partnership with Fox Electrical Contracts on Nelson Street in Belfast. While STIEBEL ELTRON products have been present in the all-Ireland market through distributors since its UK headquarters opened 16 years ago, Brexit together with the advantages

of a physical presence in the market prompted the expansion into Dublin. Blanchardstown was selected for its easy access to the airport and motorway network, with STIEBEL ELTRON’s logistics partner Rhenus occupying neighbouring premises. Stock can be delivered anywhere on the island of Ireland within 24 hours, with Rhenus housing stock in Blanchardstown and potentially at its Galway depot. “We have over 1,500 stock-keeping units that we can put onto the Irish market, but generally 80% of the turnover comes from 20% of the stock and that’s what we’re going to be promoting to the Irish market,” said Mark. Its range spans small domestic to large commercial applications, from 5kW to 1MW, with larger projects often combining air-source heat pumps with electric space heating, hot water and ventilation products. “If we look at a school for example, we might put a heat pump in for the heating solution,” said Mark. “However, because there are lots of points of hot water being produced, we might also put small instantaneous water heaters in at point of use and provide hand dryers and things

like that from our product portfolio, so we’re creating almost a turnkey solution for the mechanical electrical installation company.” Five employees are already in place at the new office, supporting customers from end-consumers to installers,

developers, consultants and architects. STIEBEL ELTRON’s strategy is to pair a sales representative with a service engineer, with the two working closely together. “A key part of what we’re offering, the differentiator, is our service provision,” said Mark. “We work hand in glove with installation partners to help them grow their business and we support them, particularly those customers who are trying to move into heat pump technology from existing fossil fuels. “What we do at STEIBEL ELTRON is train them completely free of charge, commission their systems free of charge and hand hold them all the way through the process to make sure they’re competent and understand what they’re doing. “We’ll take leads to installers to help them

HEATING AND PLUMBING ENGINEERS URGED TO UPSKILL

FOR ENERGY TRANSITION

Electrical contracting certification body NICEIC is urging heating and plumbing engineers in Northern Ireland to upskill in low-carbon energy solutions. Consumer interest in renewables is rising amid heating cost inflation and a rolling out of government support for green home upgrades, said NICEIC, which has launched new qualifications in Solar Thermal Hot Water and Heat Pumps. The UK government recently confirmed a Clean Heat Market Mechanism will be implemented from April 1, setting targets for heating appliance manufacturers to sell a set proportion of low-carbon heat pumps against fossil fuel boilers. In addition to a £6bn funding pot for cutting energy use and bills in around a million homes UK-wide in the Autumn Budget, the UK government has allocated an additional £1.25bn to the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund for insulating or retrofitting 140,000 homes. Paul Collins, Technical Director at NICEIC, said, “The range of low carbon technologies available now is vast. Those installers who do invest in good training and have a solid understanding

PHOENIX ENERGY IS SUPPORTING TRIALS, INCLUDING A PILOT BELFAST HOME, AIMING TO MEASURE THE EFFICIENCY AND ENERGY COST SAVINGS OF HYBRID GAS- AND-ELECTRIC SOLUTIONS… Showcasing a revolutionary development in home heating solutions

Phoenix Energy, alongside Refresh NI and manufacturer Alpha, hosted partners to an open house event in Belfast earlier this year to showcase the latest cutting- edge technology in home heating, a hybrid solution combining an electric heat pump and gas boiler. The event comes at a time when the

Northern Ireland energy industry is ramping up its exploration of solutions to achieve net zero, and decision makers are considering which technologies can best integrate with existing infrastructure and ultimately deliver low-cost, low-disruption measures for consumers. The Belfast home is part

of a wider trial that aims to measure the efficiency and energy cost savings of hybrid gas-and-electric solutions. Speaking at the event, Phoenix Energy CEO Kailash Chada outlined the significance of the integrated solution. “This is an exciting time for the energy industry,” said Kailash. “The hybrid

system showcased today is making a considerable contribution to carbon savings, reducing emissions by approximately 45% compared to a gas-only boiler whilst also reducing the customer’s energy consumption and bills. “Ultimately, it will be the demand of customers that will drive the need for a lower energy solution. Customers can benefit from using less energy, and from better efficiencies through the electric heat pump element, whilst retaining the reliability that a gas boiler provides across all seasons to meet the comfort levels that householders demand. “As the gas industry begins to

decarbonise and progresses its pathway to net zero through the introduction of renewable gas solutions such as biomethane, it’s great to see new innovative customer solutions like this one coming into the local marketplace.” Bill Cherry, Chief Executive of Refresh NI, said, “As a local installation company that’s been in the industry for over 30

years, I can truly say this is one of the most exciting innovations we have brought to the local marketplace. Introducing a new, decarbonising technology that is an evolution from existing infrastructure means that customers will very soon be able to benefit from renewable energy solutions that are affordable, without disruption to their homes and lives.”

A new publication offers specific guidance for engineers complying with carbon monoxide detection regulations in Northern Ireland. The guide has been created by the Heating and Hotwater Industry Council (HHIC) and Council of Gas Detection and Environmental Monitoring (CoGDEM), following several regulatory changes creating differing requirements across the regions of the UK. It provides best practice for each region, addressing potential confusion among engineers around the variation in CO legalisation across NI, England, Wales and Scotland. The role of heating engineers in maintaining CO safety throughout the industry is growing in importance, with all property owners required to ensure CO detectors are present in appropriate locations in compliance with legislation. Differing requirements - including the number of CO detectors required in a property, batteries that must be used and the position in which detectors must be installed - are included in the guide. Andy Curtis, Director of CoGDEM, said, “There may still be confusion around the extent of responsibility of repairing, replacing and testing detectors. Our guide has been created to put this uncertainty to rest and ensure safety in properties across the UK.” www.hhic.org.uk GUIDE OUTLINES CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTION REQUIREMENTS IN NORTHERN IRELAND

FOCUS ON BOILERS

MANUFACTURER - NAVIEN

NAVIEN UK TECHNICAL DIRECTOR SEAN KELEHER DISCUSSES HOW THE FIRM’S AWARD-WINNING RANGE OF NEXT-GENERATION BOILERS HAS LED TO A NEW COMBI CROSSOVER CATEGORY… Reinventing what is possible for hot water comfort

A global operator with a 45-year heritage in the heating business, Navien is supplying the Irish market with its NCB ON range of boilers delivering consistently hot water in larger homes without a cylinder. Traditionally, combi boilers have been unsuitable for installation into larger multi- occupancy properties, particularly those with several bathrooms or en-suites. Navien has broken the mould with its ON technology, delivering a combi boiler without the cylinder, slow heat-up times or low flow rates. Backed by the efficiency and intelligence of pioneering technology and expert technical support, the range is available with up to 12-years warranty to give customers peace of mind. The NCB ON range has reinvented what is possible in larger homes, with the frustration of showers and taps fluctuating between hot and cold a problem of the past. The boilers within the range are an added bonus for customers who would like to add value to their home by creating space for additional storage or a small WC. Water-adjusting and water-mixing valves within the boilers maximise hot water comfort by using sensors to keep the hot water outlet at a consistent temperature. If water is not hot enough, the water- adjusting valve will slow down the water, so it can be heated up to the required level. If too hot, it will blend in cold water with the water-mixing valve to bring the

temperature down to the right level. To boost water and energy savings, the NCB700 ON has a built-in secondary circulation pump and comes with a NaviCirc, designed to halt the secondary circulation if it senses the water temperature has gone above 35°C. This gives a fast hot water draw-off time and guarantees consistently hot water in customers’ homes, with the whole process taking an industry-leading nine seconds. All components, including the PRV, are easily accessible and identifiable to fix faults quickly and the boilers feature a keyless filling loop, the NaviFill, providing an easy method for customers to top up boiler pressure themselves. rating when used with Navien’s Smart Plus controller and boasts flow rates up to an industry-leading 22 litres per minute, an outstanding turn-down ratio of 15:1 and maximised recirculation of domestic hot water. These are just a few of the reasons why the NCB700 ON was voted Domestic Heating Product of the Year at the 2022 Energy Saving Awards. This summer Navien continues their commitment to bringing new innovative boilers to Ireland’s market, with the launch of its NCB500 System Boiler. Ideal for retrofit, the boiler can be installed into existing systems easily and is suitable for both small and large family homes. To find out more, visit https://navien.co.uk/professional

FOCUS ON BOILERS

MANUFACTURER - BAXI

WITH ENERGY PRICES AN ONGOING CONCERN, BAXI TRAINING MANAGER IAN TROTT OFFERS RECOMMENDATIONS FOR OPTIMISING EFFICIENCY IN HOME HEATING SYSTEMS… How can installers boost boiler efficiency?

It has become common knowledge that homeowners are feeling the effects of high energy bills. As a result, heating engineers’ roles have become just as focused on advising on heating system efficiency as they are on fitting or maintaining heating appliances. The latest boiler technology arguably works at the highest possible efficiency levels, so it’s up to engineers to help eke out any further gains via other means. A whole array of design features ensure that modern boilers can warm a home using relatively little energy. Some models come in a range of outputs to minimise the risk of oversizing, while others are certified for OpenTherm to maximise the impact of controls.

That’s certainly the case with Baxi’s latest 600 and 800 Combi and System 2 boilers which both offer those features and many more besides. A correctly installed, commissioned, operated and maintained appliance is, however, only the start.

While engineers tend to focus on the boiler itself, it’s important to consider all factors that impact the home’s heat.

changes to the customer’s heating system. For example, customers need to be aware of how weather compensation works on warmer days so they can rest assured that they will be warm – even if their radiators might not be. Conversations with customers are key to helping them save money and energy. Heating engineers have an opportunity to consult on household energy use and ensure their customers understand measures for optimising their system to better serve their family’s needs.

improvements to windows will have a positive impact on the building’s heat retention, enabling greater energy savings. Though not an installer’s specialism, these considerations can be made during any conversation with customers about heating efficiency. Similarly, Thermostatic Radiator Valves (TRVs) are integral to efficient boiler-led systems too, though many older homes don’t have them. Discussing the energy and cost benefits of TRVs will ensure homeowners can make informed decisions for their households.

users to see and adjust boiler settings, monitor energy use and control their system, all from a phone. They also make scheduling easy as users can pre- set desired temperatures for different days. Installers can help boost boiler efficiency by recommending weather compensation. Baxi’s IFOS (in-flue outdoor sensor) uses a sensor in the outdoor section of flue to register weather changes and adjust the heat output accordingly. Heating installers may discuss changes
