WORK AT LOS ANGELES HARBOR
Oscar Zimmermann, Supt.
tT 'IM E and time again in our work we meet with someone" who remarks that back in New York, or Boston, or Philadel phia they were told that “When you get to San Pedro someone will come aboard with the Gospel and Moody Books, but that’s the only place you can look for a visit from the Christian people. No one comes around in San Francisco.” This time the remark was made by a colored steward who said that he was a minister of the Gospel and that he wis waiting to reach San Pedro to meet the “Christian brother.” A blessed time was had in fel lowship and he said that he would go back to preach the Gospel as soon as he arrived at his destination. Every day brings varied experiences and new blessings as well as new opportunities and new responsibilities. We can only touch the fringe of these vast opportunities and of the great limitless need of the men of the seas.- Nine-tenths of the seamen are yet unreached, despite the efforts which are made to reach them through missions on shore. While the work is hard, The hardest hardship to endure is to be unable to branch out and to, be compelled to see thousands of men coming to a port like San Francisco and nothing done to bring them to Christ. Who will occupy that open door ? Will you not pray that we may be enabled to do a work up there in San Francisco also, as we wait for funds to be sent from Him with which to start a far- reaching work? Among the “visible” results lately was a man on board a naval vessel who accepted
Christ. The worker dealing with him found him ready- and “ripe,” and he took his stand openly in the presence of some of his comrades and his decision showed that the Lord had been dealing with him long before the ship was boarded. We rejoice, in the way he acknowledged the .Lord publicly and thank Him for it all. Another man came out for Christ (pro fessedly), being a cook on one of the war vessels latëly in port. This did not seem to be such a clear case, but having com mitted him to the Lord we feel sure that He will lead and guide and rescue him com pletely from the snare of Roman Cathol icism. Pray for him. During the last few months the Lord has seemed to lay upon our hearts the great need among seamen, and has led us to ask Him to use us to pray for a nation-wide^ movement to place Bibles and Moody Books on board the ships. We are pray ing the Lord to give us a camera so that here and there we may take “living pic tures” of the work and conditions found here, with a view to preparing slides which can be used to illustrate the work. A postal card size camera, even a second hand one, would do. God is answering prayer for Japanese Bibles and Testaments and $250.00 for that special purpose has come in since January 1st, 1916. Two hundred and fifty New Testaments in Japanese and two hundred in Chinese were carefully distributed and gladly received on board of another large immigrant ship last month, bound for Peru.
