When the newlywed Agnes Marshal moves into a grand house in 1878, she is puzzled to open a door and (thanks to a magical painting) be catapulted into a world of flamingos, puddings and “the most splendid, majestic, regal, decorated creature”: the Quintessentially Quaint Queen of Ices. Agnes’ diary entry ends abruptly here.
