Battling for a scoop of success, Signor Staroli and the ill-fated Marconi Ballerie are rival ice-cream business owners. One day, after making a rather risky soul-swap with Satan, Marconi bursts into town in a fancy ice-cream-mobile before he and his cart are dragged into the bowels of the earth. Marconi is forever cursed to ply his trade in the underworld, but is permitted to return once a year on Halloween. Beware all those who buy from his cart!

Amid the fight of the Suffragettes to gain votes for women in 1909, a travelling entertainment known as the Punch Him Judy Booth is wheeled into town squares and seaside destinations. Untrained husbands are biffed into submission, uttering “Ooof, you have smashed my scruttock sack!” Men who survive are awarded medals in purple, white and green (the colours of the movement). Those who didn’t survive ran for government positions.
