Fine Art Collector | Spring 2019

Put on your reading glasses, it’s back to school as we pick up where we left off in our autumn issue. Don’t forget that you can read our previous magazines online if you need a refresher.

GRAFFITI (John D WILSON) This term originates from both Greek and Italian: the Greek word graphein (to write) and the Italian word graffito (a scratch). Starting in Philadelphia in the late 1960s, its initial purpose was to make political statements or mark gang territory, but its bright colours and hip-hop influences transformed it into the art form we know today. Arguably the most famous graffiti artist in the UK, Banksy has used walls, doorways and bridges across the UK to display his political and social commentary. He also made his way into Aqueduct by John D Wilson, resulting in a striking ‘art within art’ composition.
