JUXTAPOSITION (Keith Maiden)

Juxtaposition is an act of positioning things side by side to highlight their different qualities. It’s widely used in photography and other visual arts to compare, contrast and add interest to the artworks. Avarice Egocentric by Keith Maiden uses the juxtaposition of a classically biblical representation of Jesus adorned with tattoos and icons of modern life, to highlight the hypocritical nature and declining morality of society.

KITSCH (XUE WANG)

Used since the 1920s, kitsch is the German word for trash. In English, it is used to describe cheap, garish or overly sentimental forms. Clement Greenberg, an influential American art critic, defined kitsch as an art term in his essay Avant-Garde and Kitsch in 1939. He linked it to the entirety of pop culture and presented it as the opposite of high art. Since the 1950s, both the growing interest in popular culture and the emergence of pop art in the 60s has changed that perception. The term kitsch is subjective and today many artists use it as a form of expression. Kitsch has become a well-established and essential element in a modern culture landscape. With inspirations ranging from Victoriana to dolls and funfairs, artist Xue Wang doesn’t shy away from kitsch aesthetics. Her lowbrow pop surrealist creations fuse fairy tale themes with elements of macabre.
