ELEMENT 3.3 - TRAINING SCENARIO: ESCAPE AND EVACUATE COLLEAGUE

Learning objectives:

24) The participants can perform a pre-use inspection of firefighting equipment (Skills, intermediate level)

25) The participants can solve how to act in a given situation based on an assessment of the fire and select the right extinguishing media according to the fire classes (Ability, basic level)

26) The participants can apply fire extinguishers efficiently and safely (Skill, intermediate level)

27) The participants can apply a fire blanket efficiently and safely (Skill, intermediate level)

28) The participants can act independently to escape from a smoke-filled environment in the event of an unmanageable fire (Ability, intermediate level)

29) The participants can take responsibility for the evacuation of personnel and ensure all are safely accounted for in the event of an unmanageable fire (Ability, intermediate level)

Scenario description The scenario starts with personnel discovering a small solid fuel fire in a storage area. Next, the personnel attempt to fight the fire and fail. After attempting to extinguish the fire, the fire develops and becomes unmanageable, leading to evacuation. Lastly, during evacuation from the smoke-filled environment, one colleague has sustained injuries and needs to be evacuated.

The participants shall:

Select the appropriate fire extinguisher

Perform proper pre-use actions and checks

Effectively deploy the fire extinguisher on the fire

Consider environmental factors and impact on firefighting including restricted spaces, inhalation, and displacement of gases

Evacuate from a smoke-filled area, ensuring that the group evacuates safely

Effectively deploy a fire blanket to extinguish fire on a person (optional dependent on national legislation and scenario)
