57) The participants can take responsibility for performing buddy checks of tethering on colleagues prior to and during working at height (Ability, intermediate)

The instructor shall:

Explain that it is never acceptable to work directly above another person

Explain and demonstrate methods for mitigating the risk of dropped objects e.g.:

a.

closing hatches

b.

covering openings

c.

object attachment and tethering

d.

personal closed top tool bags

e.

rated lift bags

Clarify the concept of a “Drop Zone”

Clarify that transporting tools, equipment, accessories, minor components, items, and parts must be done in approved bags or containers, and stored away from potential falls such as open hatches, edges and platform openings (proper housekeeping)

Present further dropped object preventive actions where relevant, e.g. toolbox talks, job-safe- analysis, “take-five”, DROPS-sweeps, and DROPS-surveys (proper housekeeping)

Encourage the participants to share experiences from work situations, where haste or other constraints did or could have led to poor work safety

Ask questions and facilitate a discussion about awareness of tethering and safe work in demanding situations, such as emergency procedures and drills, where tools and equipment may be hastily handled or misplaced

Facilitate a discussion where participants share the individual's responsibility for tethering and safe work practices in demanding situations

Lead a discussion on how to prevent injuries arising from dropped objects by staying out of the drop zone of workers at height
