NOTHING BEATS OPEN-FIRE COOKING It’s the Main Reason I Love Camping!
Late summer is one of my favorite times of the year because it’s the perfect time to go camping! I’ve always enjoyed being outdoors, spending time with family and friends and making memories to last a lifetime. I started camping when I was a kid, and the tradition continued as I got older and had kids of my own. My family and I have tons of fond memories of camping. But if you asked me what I love the most about it, I could easily tell you that being around the campfire and cooking is my favorite thing to do. Each time I go camping, everyone must cook at least one meal. But cooking can be a struggle if you’re not prepared. However, I found a camping necessity that makes cooking in the great outdoors easier than ever: fire rings. Years ago, my family and several friends camped at Wolf’s Den Family Campground in Connecticut. We had such a great weekend filled with laughter, tons of activities and delicious food! The campsite had fire rings you could use to cook and grill on, and I loved them so much that I was hellbent on getting one for my home! These things were awesome — you could adjust the height of the grill, and it can also be used as a campfire! So, when we arrived home after our camping trip, I immediately started looking into fire rings. I found a company called Pilot Rock, which makes equipment for several campgrounds, and they sold fire rings. I added the item to my cart and purchased

it so fast — I was so excited for it to arrive! After eagerly waiting for the order, I installed the fire ring on my backyard patio, and it’s been there for 20 years. Allison and I love nothing more than having a Friday or Saturday night campfire in our backyard. We invite our friends over, share a freshly cooked meal and relax by the fire. This was probably the best purchase I’ve ever made — it’s like we have a campground in our backyard! We’ve made some of the best food on these fire rings. My sister-in-law made pasta on it once, which I’d never seen before, but it was delicious. Other foods we’ve cooked include

Homeless Man Rescues a Family From Apartment Fire NOT ALL ANGELS HAVE WINGS
One fear many people have is their home catching on fire, or worse, being inside when it happens. And for one family in Arizona, this exact incident occurred. Thankfully, a hero was able to save her and her family. For Claudia Jimenez, everything seemed to be going as planned that night — she and her daughters were sleeping peacefully, as were her two dogs. Then, Claudia heard her fire alarm ring rapidly. She immediately jumped out of bed and saw her entire apartment engulfed in flames. The fire surrounded the front door, barricading the family inside. The only option was the second- story window, so Claudia opened the window and began desperately pleading for help. The first person to arrive at the scene wasn’t a first responder but Joe Hollins, who lived in a homeless encampment with his wife close to Claudia’s apartment. When Joe arrived, he was determined
to help Claudia and her family in any way he could.
Because of him, we’re alive, and my daughters are safe.” The community is surrounding the family right now and helping them get back on their feet, and CBS viewers are clamoring to find out how they can support Joe and honor his bravery. Thank you, Joe, for your courage and grace. Not everyone has your strength or kindness!
Claudia’s only way out was through the window, but she was nervous about the height — she didn’t want her girls or animals to get hurt! But Joe comforted Claudia by saying he would catch them all in his arms. Although it was a difficult decision for Claudia, she dropped her 1-year-old, Valerie, to Joe, then her 8-year-old, Natalie, and finally, the two dogs. Joe successfully caught everyone and helped them reach safety. Finally, Claudia jumped out the window and into Joe’s arms. While their home may have been destroyed, the family was alive, safe and healthy. Once everything calmed down, the family thanked Joe for his bravery. While Joe believes anyone would’ve done what he did if they were in his situation, Claudia disagrees. She told CBS News, “I will forever be thankful for him … to me, he was an angel.

prime ribs, tenderloins, whole turkeys, turkey breasts, chicken breasts and a couple thousand hamburgers and steaks. But my favorite thing to cook over a fire is breakfast food. Whether camping on a campsite or in my backyard, I always look forward to starting a fire and cooking waffles, pancakes, bacon, eggs and other mouthwatering breakfast spreads. However, I also enjoy making doughnuts over an open fire. Once you try one of these baked goods,
you’ll never want a doughnut from the supermarket again! This year, I’m going to attempt to make pretzel doughnuts. It may seem like these two shouldn’t go together, but I think it will be delicious! I love my fire rings so much that when I design my dream home, I will have an indoor fireplace in the kitchen that I can use to cook over and an outdoor fireplace for the backyard kitchen. I have a Pinterest board with some ideas of what I want, and I hope to make my dreams a reality one day. But until then, I will enjoy my patio campfire setup on my patio. This summer has been filled with many delicious open-fire meals, and I look forward to using my fire rings as much as possible before the season ends. I hope all have had a great summer!

We’ve all been there — you’re relaxing at home, and suddenly, you have the urge for something sweet or salty. You get up and head to the pantry to see if you have any candy, chocolate or chips. While it’s okay to occasionally eat these sweet and salty foods, you don’t want to make a habit. But what do you do if you have these cravings again? Are there any healthy alternatives? If you’re craving something sweet, try … Fruit Berries, apples, bananas, grapes, cherries, pineapples, mangoes and other fruits are naturally sweet and contain many benefits to your body. Many berries are high in fiber and have strong antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. For extra sweetness, you can mix fruit into yogurt or make a smoothie! Dark Chocolate Sometimes, chocolate hits the perfect spot — and you don’t have to give it away! Dark chocolate contains has healthy plant compounds known as polyphenols (as long as the dark chocolate contains at least 70% cacao). Because dark chocolate contains more cacao, you will consume more fiber, iron, magnesium, copper, potassium and zinc in just a few bites over regular milk chocolate. If you’re craving something salty, then try … Popcorn If you use raw kernels and air-pop your popcorn, it’s a great healthy alternative to potato chips! You will receive a great source of fiber and only a little bit of sodium (if you choose to lightly season your popcorn). Veggie Chips You can choose from dozens of different veggie chip brands — you’ve probably seen them in your grocery store! You can also make your own by thinly slicing your favorite veggies, mixing them in salt, pepper and a dash of oil and allowing them to cook on a baking sheet in the oven for 20 minutes at 400 degrees F. A CAT’S NOSE KNOWS HOW WILLOW SAVED HER OWNER’S LIFE
We all wish our pets would be there for us in an emergency. Dogs, cats, and other animals can accomplish amazing feats when provided with enough love and care, and a cat from Liverpool named Willow recently proved that many times over. A cat’s sense of smell is incredibly effective at detecting when something is abnormal, and Willow used her nose to save her owner in the nick of time. For many with diabetes, falling into a diabetic coma is a constant concern, and they regularly check their blood sugar levels and take insulin shots to avoid that scenario. Amanda Jameson, a 51-year-old woman from Liverpool, received a diabetes diagnosis years ago but had always stayed on top of it. In April 2023, she fell asleep while
her blood sugar was dangerously low. Thankfully, her cat, Willow, noticed something was wrong and sprang into action. Willow went to the living room, where Amanda’s husband had fallen asleep watching television. Willow proceeded to bite his leg and jump on him until he woke up around 4 a.m. He could tell something was wrong, as this was abnormal behavior for Willow, so he followed her to the bedroom, where he spotted his wife. She was slumped over and unresponsive, and he immediately called her an ambulance. Doctors informed Amanda’s husband that she was moments away from slipping into a diabetic coma, but Willow had smelled something off and gotten help before it was too late.
Most pets would get a few extra treats for their heroism, but Willow’s feats earned her a more prestigious award. The National Cat Awards named Willow as a finalist for their “Moggy Marvels” category. If Willow wins, she’ll receive a trophy, a £200 pet store voucher, and a year subscription to Cats Protection’s “The Cat” magazine. Although Willow likely doesn’t care about the trophy or the subscription, she’ll be happy enough with £200 worth of goodies and her owner safely by her side.
