Chapter 12. Let Go of Your Fear

being influenced by all the external factors in their life. It doesn’t take much effort to react; most people wear their attitude on their sleeve, reacting to the circumstances happening to them . The people who make it really big are those who are like a thermostat. They control the temperature. They control their environment. They respond to situations, not react to them. It takes effort and discipline to control our thoughts and ultimately respond to situations. You are what you think you are, most of the time. What if you could be so powerful that you could not just control change, but you could also alter its meaning in your life? What if, instead of your mind telling you that change meant pain or fear, you could train your mind to look at change as exciting, new, and leading to something better? Wouldn’t it be great if the thought of change instantly meant the chance for something better, something you used to dream of, an opportunity for a more fulfilled life? That the word “change” actually made you smile or even laugh out loud? Once you conquer the fear, you’ll realize that change equals only two things: 1. Something better for my family or me. 2. A valuable lesson to learn from. In the worst case, you eliminate an area not to try again. What’s the worst thing that can happen when you make a change? You could fail. But remember the phrase you learned in a previous section: “Failure, mistakes, and problems are part of success.” In fact, during an interview, Thomas J. Watson, the founder of IBM said, “If you want to be successful faster, you must double your rate of failure. Success lies on the far side of failure.” Modify the meaning of “change” in your mind, eliminate the fear, and it will be something you look forward to, because some- thing better could be just around the corner waiting for you.
