16 Chapter Make the Connection

I was on the phone the other day with a business associate. We were both traveling, so we were on our cell phones. I was driving back from the airport and he was on line at the check-in counter. In the background, I could hear flight announcements, bits of other conversations, and an occasional break up in our connection. We were trying to schedule a meeting and set an agenda, so we both trying to refer to our calendars to figure out what dates would work for each of us. A pretty typical business communica- tion, right? Well, in the middle of the call, he got to the head of the line. All along I had been asking him if it would be better if I called him back. He kept insisting it wasn’t a problem—he can multi- task with the best of them. I could tell he was distracted, and our
