Chapter 16. Make the Connection

! Would this person support your dreams? Be a great parent? ! Would he or she appreciate what you do? ! What would you love in a relationship? Now here is the simple part. ! Are you that person you described? Once you know what makes you happy, you can describe your ideal partner. Then you can make a list of what you would like the other person to do for you. Now it’s easy to see if you can get what you hope for. Are you that type of person? Are you the type to give all you would hope to receive? If you are in a relationship and you are looking for someone to listen to you when you are upset, are you able to listen in return? If you’re looking for your spouse to stay fit, are you staying fit? If you’re looking for appreciation for your hard work, are you doing the same? If you can’t give back what you want from the relation- ship, it’ll never be a totally fulfilling relationship. And if you are going into a relationship, start with these things in mind. Start the relationship as the person you plan on being through the entire relationship. Have you heard the term “bait and switch”? So many people start the relationship as a totally different person than who they really are. Inevitably, the true you comes out. So why not start out that way and avoid the headache down the road? This is the foundation—the core—of what makes a healthy rela- tionship. And with a strong core, you can build anything on any level. And these core factors relate to productive business relationships as well. You can’t create great situations for others if you haven’t created a win- ning proposition for yourself. Focus on the foundation.
