Chapter 21. Choose to Be Fulfilled

follow through. I thought it was a sign of weakness. So I always tried to accomplish something and let the act speak for itself. One specific event helped reinforce this feeling. When I was running my collision/auto sales business, I had a regular client who always came in carrying a briefcase. One day when he popped it open on my desk, I saw the two things he carried in this fairly large briefcase: 1) a check for me, and 2) a sheet of paper that had his “Goals” on it. He saw me look at the paper and offered to explain what it was. He explained that these were his goals for the next year. And boy, did he have some doozies on the list: a new house, fancy cars, his own business, an airplane, limo…you name it. He was a great guy, and he sat and talked with me about all he the things he was going to do in the next year. Most of the goals were financial, and he never once spoke of the reason why he wanted all these things. He just seemed to want them because they sounded good, and he definitely did not offer a plan of how he was going to get them. A year later, he came back for some car repair services. Within minutes, he was talking about all the things he had going on, and all the goals he had set for the New Year. However, he still did not tell me the reason why he wanted all these things. As I listened, I real- ized he had not achieved a single goal from the previous list. His goals were just empty wishes with no foundation to build upon. That instance made me see goals as something for dreamers not doers. Why write down things you want or things you want to do if you don’t have the right core to build from and actually make them happen, or a strong reason and plan how to get them? I determined at that point that “Goal Lists” were for dreamers, and I was a doer. Since then, I have learned amazing techniques to turn your dreams and goals into reality. I still believe that just writing down a goal and sticking it on your refrigerator is worth nothing. But goals constructed with a reason for setting them (and with the
