Control of Hazardous Energies Standard / V5 10032026
a. have limited functionality and have fixed test leads
Or;
b. be multimeters with an audible alert function to warn the user if the meter function selector and test leads positions are not compatible
Test probes must be selected to match the physical requirements of the test point and be in accordance with local electrical regulatory requirements
Note
Non-contact voltage detectors are for use only with non-contact voltage portals or for double checking that the lockout boundary is in an Electrically Safe Work Condition
Non-contact voltage detectors are not allowed for ‘test before touch’ verification
The above requirements for tools to be used for testing for the absence of voltage is considered best practice, but please emphasise to the participants that these requirements could vary between companies based on specific company rules and local legislation
Note
Show examples of the hazards of using a multimeter for absence of voltage testing and demonstrate how to reduce the associated risks of these hazards
Facilitate a learning activity with the participants about the hazards of using a multimeter for absence of voltage testing and how to reduce the associated risks of these hazards
Facilitate a learning activity with the participants about the advantages of voltage testing with a two- pole tester
Present the voltage rating and category (e.g., 600 V / Cat. IV) for electrical measurement equipment
Ask the participants open ended questions about the voltage rating and category (e.g., 600 V / Cat. IV) for electrical measurement equipment
Facilitate exercises for participants in how to select a voltage detector appropriate for measuring voltage at a given point in a circuit and give constructive feedback throughout this practice
Facilitate exercises for participants in performing pre-use check of the electrical measurement equipment and give constructive feedback to the participants throughout this practice
Explain the principles behind the 'Prove-Test-Prove' method, its role in electrical safety and the importance of verifying test equipment functionality before and after use
Conduct a demonstration of the 'Prove-Test-Prove' method using a calibrated Voltage Detector, emphasising the procedural steps and highlight potential errors and risks such as:
a. using unverified test instruments, failing to check all phases, misinterpreting test results.
Lead participants in a scenario-based fault simulation to test participants’ ability to correctly apply the 'Prove-Test-Prove' method, including techniques for Single Phase and 3-Phase electrical systems
