Based in the pretty village of Wetheral, we enjoy an eclectic mix of visits and outings. Explore the charming market town of Keswick with afternoon tea at Bassenthwaite Lake Station. Soak up the incredible history around Hadrian’s Wall and Roman Vindolanda. Enjoy plenty of time exploring the town of Kendal, with visits to its old museum and be tempted with some shopping before we have time in beautiful Ambleside at the northern tip of Lake Windermere.
PACKAGED ITINERARY
Day 1 Arrival We arrive at our hotel in time for dinner.
Day 4 Scenic Drive This morning, we make our way to the home of the Mint Cake, Kendal. We have some free time to explore the historic market town, where you will find the indoor market (Mon-Sat) in the Westmorland Shopping Centre and the outdoor market (Wed & Sat) in the Market Place. Perhaps visit Kendal Museum, one of the oldest museums in the UK. We then take a scenic drive through the Lake District, to picturesque Ambleside at the northern end of Windermere. Here we have some time at leisure, be sure to spot the iconic Bridge House! We can then make our way back to Wetheral via the A591, taking you past Grasmere, Rydal Water, Thirlmere & Keswick or if time allows via The Struggle and Kikstone Pass, along the shores of Ullswater before joining the M6 at Penrith. Either journey will provide spectacular scenery! Day 5 Departure After breakfast, we make our way home. Day 2 Keswick & Bassenthwaite Lake Station We spend this morning at leisure in the lovely market town of Keswick nestled between the majestic Skiddaw Mountain and the serene lake of Derwentwater with plenty of shops, restaurants and museums to explore. In the afternoon, we enjoy a delicious afternoon tea at Bassenthwaite Lake Station . Situated opposite the scenic Dubwath Silver Meadows nature reserve, the restored railway station has a delightful café with a full- size replica steam train, and former Art Deco carriage in which to enjoy our indulgent tea. Day 3 Hadrian’s Wall Today we explore the highlights of Hadrian’s Wall, where we are joined by a step-on guide who will explain the true history of the wall, during a fascinating journey along Rome’s most Northerly frontier; our expert guide will bring Roman heritage to life. We explore Corbridge, a former Roman village to see some of the most spectacular parts of Hadrian’s Wall and visit Roman Vindolanda to see one of the best-preserved Roman forts and museums.
Originally a farmhouse in 1700 and converted into an inn in 1838, then a hotel in 1871, the Crown Hotel is perfectly situated in the village of Wetheral, a short drive from Carlisle, with the River Eden and the abbey and church ruins a short walk away. Each bedroom is designed with comfort and style in mind and includes tea/coffee making facilities, TV, Wi-Fi and hairdryer. Due to the age of the building, there is no lift in the hotel, but there are a number of ground floor rooms. The Conservatory Restaurant is styled with elegant décor and large windows overlook the picturesque gardens, whilst Walton’s Bar offers a more relaxed setting with traditional décor. Leisure facilities are available for use for all guests, which includes swimming pool, jacuzzi, sauna and steam room.
