Lesson Objectives By the end of this lesson the student will be able to: 1. Define financial capital . 2. List four sources of capital to fund a startup. 3. Explain how an investor recovers their investment in a startup. 4. Prepare a pitch deck for presentation to venture capitalists. 5. Write a basic 4P marketing plan for a product. Gaining Attention Engage students is a discussion: What happens to an innovation if there is no money available to complete product development and launch the business? a. the innovator cannot complete the project and is forced to give up b. the business has a weak start and fails c. another innovator with a similar product or service and beats them to the market d. any of the above In prior lessons, students learned that the process of developing an idea into a viable, marketable product can be expensive. Without the availability of financial capital , innovation would most certainly die on the vine. If innovation is the lifeblood of commerce and prosperity, as students learned in Chapter 8, capital is most certainly the lifeblood of innovation.
