Russell Grade 1 2 students recently partici- pated in the Safe Grad program with the help of the Russell Fire Department, Prescott- Russell paramedics, OPP, and Lafleur Funeral Homes. The event is an annual shocker dur- ing which a few students act out the conse- quences of a fatal drunk driving accident. Here one of the OPP constables at the scene tells the hysterical friends of Caty Owen, who plays the dead girl, that nothing can be done for their friend, who will leave in a hearse. Firefighters free the injured passenger, while the driver is being arrested.

RUSSELL | Russell High School once again held their Safe Grad e x ercise for Grade 1 2 students, using a mock accident as a sobering reminder of drinking and driving. For m an y y ears senior students in high schools in Eastern Ontario have benefited fro m the work of Lafleur Funeral Ho m es in E m brun, which be- gan the Safe Grad progra m wanting to prevent teen corpses. With the full participation of local fire depart m ents, para m edics and police servic- es, a few students enact a fatal car accident, with real cars and real e m ergenc y services. At RHS on Wednesda y , Ma y 30, a gri m sight greeted students who were first spoken to inside the school, then ca m e out to find Cat y Owen looking like a bloodied corpse, a s m ashed up car, h y sterical friends, a seriousl y injured passenger, and a drunk driver in shock. It looked ver y real as friends screa m ed and cried, tr y ing to help Cat y , who was be y ond help. Fire trucks and a m bulance screa m ed into the parking lot, while OPP tried to ascertain the cause of the accident and decide who to help first and how. The y also arrested Dar y l D y kstra. The m o m ent when the bod y bag was zipped was particularl y painful, and the trapped, injured passenger looked genuinel y terrified as para- m edics stabilized her and the jaws of life tore the roof off the car.
