May Day weekend Spring Festival of fun

I had some friends who were artists and had no place to go then.” The Spring Festival has expanded over the years to include art, music, displays and concessions of local food and bever- age, and also provided a place and time for groups like the Champlain Library and the Vankleek Hill Horticultural Society and the Nature Society to promote their activities and projects. “This is now the second-oldest local continuous festival,” Arbor said. “We try to bring culture here.”

Teeth clenched on the stem of his pipe, Phil Arbor ambled up and down alongMain Street, greeting old friends and chatting with newcomers, in between hopping up on stage to introduce the various acts entertaining spectators sitting at ease in plastic deck chairs on the sidewalk. Owner/impresario of Arbor Gallery, Phil Arbor is almost the soul of the Vankleek Hill Spring Festival, and he’s been shepherd- ing the event every season for 34 years.
