Change Challenges Our Choice-Making DON’T FIGHT THE CURRENT OF THE TIDAL WAVE OF CHANGE.

he main reason change, especially unexpected change, gets a bad rap and throws people for such a loop is because of fear the change will take something from us we want or need. With change comes choice-making, and anyone who has lived very long knows that the choices we make determine the results we get. Thoughtful, effective choice-making is critical to success and the one element that forces more choices to be made than any other is change. It doesn’t matter if it is gradual change, like growing older, or planned change, like making a move to a larger home to accommodate your grow- ing family or if it’s a sudden, unexpected change, like our family experienced when my father fell down the stairs and suffered a brain injury. All change chal- lenges the decision-making process. Most people seem to resist change. Some even admit to hating change, and their inability to “go with the flow” throws them into a tizzy that can result T

change has me scrambling and I am un- sure of my choices: I ask for help! Often, the facts I am able to gather by asking for help give me the information I need to be able to move forward without fear. Even seasoned investors need help with the facts of investment opportu- nities they are presented with. This is especially when they are considering investing in a market area they have no experience with. Choosing to ask for help does not show lack of knowledge, it shows presence of mind. Accepting change allows for peace of mind and the ability to choose a new plan of action that will create positive results. Do you want to change your life for the better? Ask for help and make better choices. •

in a meltdown of major proportions. I know people who refuse to acknowledge that changes have even occurred. They stay in denial about their circumstanc- es and avoid making any new choices based on the changes. The idea of the status quo is comforting compared to dealing with the reality of the changes. Unfortunately, that attitude escalates and complicates their problems. Do you know anybody like that? Many people don’t realize that not making choices is also choice. It’s a choice that, unfortunately, puts off the inevitable and burdens your mind and heart. Not choosing can also inconve- nience others who can’t do anything until you’ve decided what to do. I was once told by a friend that when she didn’t know what to do, she wouldn’t do anything, including admit that she didn’t know what to do.
