My First Journal Mi primer diario
Dear Family, Children’s early scribbles are their first steps in writing letters and words (see the back cover). You can help by giving them lots of writing and drawing time. Ask your child about what they made, and celebrate their ideas and creativity. Your child may also want to tell you their ideas while you write them down. For more learning, this journal includes letters, numbers, shapes, and colors that your child can practice naming. You may wish to cut out the cards. Ideas for Using the Cards Name: Arrange the letters into your child’s name. (Use blank pages to make more.) Talk: Discuss cards. “How do we know that shape is a triangle?” (Three sides) Match: Select a card and walk around the room together looking for matches. (Example: two socks for the number 2 card.) Write: Your child can color or trace inside the letter and number cards to practice making these forms. Have fun! 1 Scribbling: A random assortment of marks on paper. Sometimes marks are large and circular. Although marks do not resemble letters and numbers, they are significant as young writers show their ideas. 2 Letter-like Symbols: Sometimes these symbols are interspersed with numbers. Children can tell about their own drawings or writing. In this stage, spacing is rarely present. 3 Strings of Letters: In this stage, children write some legible letters that tell us they know more about writing. There is more awareness of the sound-to-symbol relationship. Children mostly write in capital letters and have not yet begun spacing. 4 Beginning Sounds Emerge: There will be di ff erences between a letter and a word, but children may not use spacing between words in this stage.The writing makes sense and matches the pictures.
