DIRECTOR ’ S NOTES

It has once again been an incredible journey to direct our school production. We began working on Freaky Friday towards the end of 2024, and casting our leads proved to be a very difficult task—simply because of the wealth of talent we are lucky to have at The Lakes. Our students continue to impress with their passion, dedication, and creativity in the performing arts. This year, more than 100 students have been involved— onstage, backstage, and in the band. That level of participation speaks volumes about the culture we ’ ve built around the arts here. The production team has truly become a family, united by support, encouragement, and a shared love of performance. I ’ m continually inspired by the enthusiasm, generosity, and growth I see in every student.

We ’ ve also been incredibly fortunate to have Mischa Wright, a proud member of The Lakes Alumni, return to work with us as our choreographer. Her energy, talent, and countless volunteer hours have helped bring the show to life through some truly dynamic dance numbers. In addition, a number of our senior students have taken on leadership roles—mentoring and guiding younger cast members—which is something we are deeply grateful for. Freaky Friday: The Musical is a heartwarming and hilarious story about a mother and daughter who magically swap bodies for a day—and in doing so, are forced to literally see the world through each other ’ s eyes. With themes of empathy, understanding, forgiveness and the chaos of family life, the show reminds us how important it is to stop, listen, and appreciate those we love—even when they drive us crazy! We hope you enjoy this production and celebrate with us the extraordinary achievements of our Lakes Legends.

STUDENT REFLECTIONS

One of my favourite things about the production experience is getting to know everyone better and working with everyone from different grades :)

Kiara W, Year 9

Being part of this year ’ s Freaky Friday production has been an unforgettable experience. From the very beginning, everyone has poured their time, energy, and heart into bringing this story to life. Every Thursday after school, we have all come together, whether we were learning lines, practicing dances, and helping each other out. Production has become a place where friendships have been formed, people ’ s confidence has risen, and creativity has thrived. As someone in the main cast, I had the challenge of learning all my lines and dances, which pushed me in the best possible way. One of my favourite moments was learning all the choreography for the dances, especially numbers like the finale, and then seeing everything come together during our full run throughs of Acts 1 and 2. I ’ ve truly loved every moment of it, getting to know people, sharing laughs, and watching the show grow into something really special. It hasn ’ t always been easy, but all the hard work and dedication have undeniably paid off. We ’ ve pushed through the tough moments and made some amazing memories along the way. It ’ s been so fun getting to know everyone and building friendships that go beyond the stage. Seeing how far we ’ ve come as a group has been inspiring, and I ’ m so proud of what we ’ ve created together.

Adele S, Year 11

Freaky Friday this year has been so fun, everyone is so welcoming and supportive, the crew feels like one big family that I see every Thursday, we always have so much fun at rehearsals and the choreo in every song is amazing. The vibe every time is so cool and positive.

Mannat R, Year 9

Being a part of the production is like one big family, whether you ’ re in backstage, cast, ensemble, anything! We sing, dance and act with passion and energy. It ’ s so fun and exciting watching everything come together, watching everyone become close, and seeing yourself not only grow as a character but as a person. Everyone makes you feel so welcomed, encouraged, and supported it ’ s such a safe environment.

Yvonne Y, Year 9

This year of production has been extremely exciting! The process into of making Freaky Friday allows for the expression of everyone ’ s desire and talent that they all have. The best part of Freaky Friday has been the entire cast, getting to know everyone and watching people grow in their talent of performing and encouraging others has really brought the fun and enjoyment into this fun musical. Really grateful to have the team and cast that we have!!

Georgia Short – for lighting up our stage (literally!) and helping create the show ’ s atmosphere. The Bowen Family – for donating our fabulous couch and assisting during our intensive workshops. PDS Garage Doors – for generously supporting us as a major sponsor and helping us financially deliver a show of this scale. Jose Sicurella – for filming all performances and capturing memories we ’ ll treasure. Marcus Zahra – This very talented Year 9 student made ‘ Angry Bob ’ and ‘ Caspian ’ our two puppets. We really appreciate the time it took you to make these awesome puppets. The Lakes Staff – for encouraging our students, being flexible during production weeks, and supporting us every step of the way. And finally—you – thank you for being here to support our students and celebrate their amazing achievements. Your presence means the world to them.

Bill Panas & Bonnie Lee – for believing in our vision from the start and helping us bring it to life with unwavering support. Lucy MacGregor – for her fantastic leadership of the band and her ongoing work mentoring and guiding our students with their singing. Cam Taylor – for managing the backstage team and continuing to strengthen our community connections and backstage operations. RadMila Solaja – for assisting backstage and capturing beautiful photographs that showcase our students in action.
