tion 3:10. The main problem is to determine if the words “ from the hour of temptation” denote a safe passage through the tribulation or complete exclusion from it. At this point there is a great division of opinion, post-tribulationalists • insist ing the thought to be that of “ success ful endurance” within the tribula tion, and p r e - t r i b u l a t i o n a l i s t s declaring the thought to be that of “ absolute immunity” from that hour. It should be noted that this promise is not merely one of exemption from “ trial” but from the “hour of trial.” That is, it speaks of exemption from the whole period of trial, not merely from the trial during that period. The text declares that the trial shall fall upon “ them that dwell upon the earth.” This can hardly include the Church, for the term is a strong one and speaks of those who have settled down upon the earth, completely identifying themselves with it. The word conveys the idea of perma nency and of complete identification with the Satanic world-system. Upon these “ earth-dwellers” the wrath of a righteous and angry God shall eventually fall (Rev. 6:10; 13:8, 14; 16:9, 10). Finally, due consideration must be granted the use of the Greek preposi tion ek (“ out of” ), for upon this small hinge the entire verse turns. It is very significant that the believer is promised that he shall be kept “ out of” the hour of testing when the Holy Spirit could just as easily have prom ised to keep him “ in the hour” had it been His purpose to do so. As the Author of the inspired Scriptures (2 Pet. 1:21), the Holy Spirit must choose His words with accuracy and discrimination and this instance is no exception. The only fair conclusion that can be rendered is that Revela tion 3:10 teaches the removal of the Church prior to the tribulation per iod, which means that the rapture is clearly pre-tribulational.
