Mechanochemistry: Fundamentals, applications and future

Facile approach to synthesis of ionic polymers by mechanochemical solid-state conditions Gue Seon Lee, Hyun Sub Lee and Jeung Gon Kim * Department of Chemistry and Research Institute of Physics and Chemistry, Jeonbuk National University, Republic of Korea E-mail: jeunggonkim@jbnu.ac.kr (J. G. Kim) The synthesis of ionic polymers, which can be applied to various fields such as batteries, drug delivery, hydrogels and ion filters, has been realized under solid-state mechanochemical ball-milling manner, promoting eco-friendly and simple synthetic process. The conventional solution polymerization of ionic monomers has suffered a narrow choice of solvents and poor efficiency; direct ball-milling polymerization is not limited by solubility and miscibility. In this presentation, free-radical polymerization of styrenic and acrylic ionomers and Ru-initiated ring-opening metathesis polymerization of norbornenyl ionomers, proved excellent performance of mechanochemistry producing desired product polymers under the ball milling from a wide range of solid ionic monomers. This approach facilitates the production of ionic polymers without purifications in a short time. References 1. L Wang, L Zhu, M Hickner, B Bai, Chem.
