Announcing Buchanan Law Group: A New Era Begins Hiring Smart and Leading by Example

Our team is an exceptional group of professionals dedicated to delivering the highest level of service through unparalleled teamwork. Achieving such high performance requires humility, collaboration, and a shared commitment to excellence. Regardless of your industry, finding the right people for your team is challenging. Whether it’s hiring new talent or promoting from within, acquiring and nurturing the right talent is no small feat. MANAGING AND HIRING Throughout my time as an attorney and business owner, I have learned I am a better leader and manager than a recruiter. I inherently trust people to handle the jobs or assignments I give them. When I first started, I took a broad approach to talent acquisition, aiming to build a diverse team. However, over time, I realized the importance of scrutinizing whether prospective employees had the specific skills and experience needed for the tasks at hand. Delegation is crucial, but you soon learn that not everyone can rise to the challenge. Last year, our firm instituted significant changes to HR and developed an amazing team across the board through talent acquisition and dismissal. It is never easy to let an employee go, but sometimes, it is necessary. I have actually stepped back from hiring at my firm, entrusting that role to those more suited to detect and evaluate the talent required to get the job done. Recognizing my shortcomings in that area and delegating effectively is one of my strengths and a

are ready for a challenge, I will give them the opportunity to prove themselves. I believe that “progress” is better than “perfection.” I understand that mistakes are part of growth as long as they are acknowledged and corrected promptly. We all make mistakes — myself included — but it is a missed opportunity if we do not learn from them. Observing how you and your team perform in high-stakes situations reveals your potential. Identifying and leveraging inherent strengths is key to becoming a successful leader. Owning up to mistakes is crucial for success in this business. True leadership involves taking ultimate responsibility, something I strive to do consistently. If my team falls short, it reflects on me. Delegating responsibility also means giving up some control, which can be challenging but is necessary. To claim success, one must also acknowledge and learn from failures. Successfully developing talent requires a hands-on approach. If someone tells me they

The Cool Story of Cryotherapy Clinically Chill In the 1997 film, “Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery,” the villain, Dr. Evil, and his feline doppelganger, a bald, wrinkly sphynx cat named Mr. Bigglesworth, freeze themselves to evade capture. Back then, that was just an outlandish plot point in a comedy film. Fast-forward 20 years, and people are intentionally subjecting themselves to frigid temperatures in a medical treatment known as cryotherapy. Far from being a facetious detail in a sci-fi film, cryotherapy is any treatment that involves freezing or near-freezing temperatures and can treat everything from warts to cancers. FIRST PATIENT TO FREEZE In 19th-century England, the brilliant Arnott brothers, both doctors, embarked on divergent paths. Dr. James Arnott was the first person to use extreme cold to destroy tissue surgically. Utilizing an early form of cryotherapy, he endeavored to treat breast, uterine, and skin cancer and won awards for his innovative efforts. His brother, the scientist Neil Arnott, went on to invent the slow-combustion stove. Can you imagine how those two must have fought over the thermostat growing up? End Your Marriage Amicably

CHILL OUT AND RECOVER It can take some getting used to, but cryotherapy can be an effective, if unconventional, way to treat a variety of maladies. It can treat muscle and joint pain, combat inflammation, and even reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. Moreover, cryotherapy can help you chill metaphorically and physically: Exposing your body to low temperatures can help reduce stress and lower your metabolism. Have you ever heard of an ice bath? Cold water immersion, a form of cryotherapy, is popular among athletes for reducing muscle fatigue and stiffness after a tough game or workout. Whether you are looking to zap a mole, cull a cancer, or relax a muscle, cryotherapy is a wonderful and exciting treatment to help you put your problems on ice.

Collaborative Divorces and Win-Win Solutions

If you want to avoid a contentious divorce battle in a stuffy courtroom, then you should know other options are available. Despite what you may have heard or imagined, divorce does not have to result in a win-lose settlement. Collaborative divorce is a less adversarial, more cooperative and amicable approach to the end of a marriage, where the goal is to find a win-win solution that works for both parties. If you are interested in a collaborative divorce, here is what you need to know. HOW IT WORKS Collaborative divorce involves, you guessed it, collaboration. Both parties are represented by their own attorneys but work together rather than against one another to reach an amicable agreement. The parties and their attorneys must sign a Participation Agreement, a contract that binds both parties to resolve the dispute collaboratively. To accomplish this, a team of professionals gets involved. This process consists of a series of meetings between the parties, wherein they work with these professionals to achieve a successful outcome. One crucial team member is a divorce coach, who helps resolve custody, parenting time, and co-parenting issues.

They also attend meetings between the parties and facilitate healthy and effective dialogue. Mediators may also help work through issues as

they arise. This results in both parties working together rather than against each other, and if done correctly, can result in a win-win solution. IS IT FOR YOU?

Given that both parties must meet and work together to complete the process, a collaborative divorce may not be for everyone. A traditional divorce may be a preferential course of action if you cannot get along with your spouse despite the help of professional intermediaries. But if you can work together, then a collaborative divorce may be the right option for you and your spouse.

Protecting Pets Companion Animals’ Well-being Is Important in Illinois

Depending on which state you live in, the law may treat your pet more like a member of the family than a piece of property. If you have pets that are legally characterized as companion animals, then the court will determine sole or joint ownership of those companion animals in the event of a

divorce. However, Illinois is one of the only states in the country to consider a pet’s well-being when determining its ownership in the event of a divorce. In other words, Illinois has the pet’s best interests at heart. PETITIONING FOR SOLE OWNERSHIP If you are worried your spouse will abuse or neglect your pet(s) during your divorce, you can take a few measures to protect the animal. 750 ILCS 5/501 says that if you are going through a divorce in Illinois, either party may petition the court for temporary sole possession of that companion animal owned by both parties. If you can prove the animal’s well-being would be in danger if the other party owned it, the court may grant your request. DETERMINING OWNERSHIP According to 750 ILCS 5/503, “[T]he court shall take into consideration the well-being of the companion animal” when considering whether to allocate sole or joint ownership of it to the parties involved in a divorce. A notable exception to this rule is service animals. If one of the parties in the divorce requires a service animal, the court will not allocate ownership; the relevant party will retain ownership. Another exception is if the parties have a written agreement that allocates the ownership and responsibility of the companion animal beforehand. This law provides for better, more humane treatment of companion animals in these situations, an important consideration for anyone with pets going through a divorce.
