Individu- ally or in pairs, students play the harp under hepburn’s guidance, allowing them to ex- press their emotions and connect with oth- ers through the power of music. It gener- ates a sense of joy and connectedness that hepburn hopes can be channelled to allow students facing anxiety or other emotional issues to integrate with their peers. The pro- gram also provides a sense of validation and boosts student self-esteem.

VANKLEEK HILL | Students at Pleas- ant Corners Public School will gain ex- panded learning opportunities through the Healing Harps and Drums Program thanks to a $24,400 grant from the On- tario Trillium Foundation. Principal Mary McCrimmon-Leduc offi- cially announced the two-year pilot proj- ect last week. An initiative of the Vankleek Hill Music Festival, a non–profit organiza- tion comprised of areamusic teachers, the program is offered by well-known harpist ian hepburn and drummerWilliam Laurin. The program engages all students with a particular focus on assisting those on the autism spectrum as well as students fac- ing a range of personal and emotional challenges. The goal is to complement programs already in the school, said Mc- Crimmon-Leduc. It introduces students to the joy of music and gives them an outlet to communicate with others and express their emotions in a positive way. “The big piece for us is student engage- ment,” said McCrimmon-Leduc. “We’re looking to provide students with an ave- nue with which they can sift through their social and emotional challenges.” While the harps and drums have been introduced in some capacity to all stu- dents, for the duration of this academic year the program will focus on children in Grades 3, 5 and 6. Musician and songwriter Ember Swift, a former Dalkeith resident now living in China, returns to the area for a concert with Long Shen Dao, a Chinese reggae band, June 28 at 8 p.m. at the Granary Beizli, 3270 County Road 10, Vankleek Hill. An internationally touring artist, Swift has released 11 albums and a DVD and continues to have a loyal following across many national boundaries. Styles include jazz, gypsy, R&B, funk, pop, folk‐ rock and blues and even some French cabaret. Found- ed in 2007, Long Shen Dao has been lauded by media and audiences alike as “China’s first real and significant reggae band.” All core members of the band, having absorbed the rich essence of Chi- nese traditional culture, have success- fully merged Eastern philosophies into this modern musical style. Songs writ- ten in their mother tongue of Mandarin Chinese are paired with ancient Chinese instrumentation then fused into the base framework of reggae music and then are Chinese reggae, Ember Swift expanded upon once more into the realm of ska, dub, ragga, and electro.
