Benjamin Banneker
Born: November 9, 1731, Oella, Maryland. He was a largely self-educated astronomer, mathematician, compiler of almanacs and writer. Also, he is noted for his letters to Thomas Jefferson criticizing Jefferson's hypocritical stance on slavery, using Jefferson’s own words to make the case for the abolition of slavery. Died: October 9, 1806, Baltimore, Maryland.
The Banneker Historical Park and Museum is a 142-acre site in Baltimore County dedicated to telling the inspiring story of the life and times of Benjamin Banneker, who is often considered the first African American of science. The grounds are open from sunrise to sundown daily. However, the cabin is open noon to 3:00 P.M., M - F and 10:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M, Sat. and Sun. The museum is currently closed for construction.
