Love of the Game Auctions Fall, 2023 Premier Auction

13. 1913 M101-3 Sporting News Postcards Ty Cobb (HOF) - SGC PR 1

Issued as part of a six-card set by the Sporting News , featuring attractive tinted photos of several of the day’s stars, the cards are among the more desirable mainstream baseball postcard issues due to player selection and scarcity. This example is strong for the grade, a beautiful colorized portrait of Ty Cobb graded PR 1 by SGC largely due to edge and surface wear, most notably near Cobb’s chin where some of the surface abrasions have yielded minor paper loss. The front while worn presents remarkably well with light corner wear and edge chipping being the primary flaws. A tremendous card easily the key to a desirable and attractive issue. MINIMUM BID: $2,500

14. 1952 Topps #261 Willie Mays (HOF) - SGC EX 5

One of the absolute keys to the 1952 Topps set, the semi-high card of Willie Mays has bene enjoying some well-deserved attention over the past several years. This specimen is a blazer, graded EX 5 by SGC with a fantastic, dark purple background setting off the image of Mays in the foreground. The Hall-of-Famer is sporting a crisp but also subtly shaded white uniform, with a dark cap prominently featuring the interlocking and crystal clear orange NY logo. There is the tiniest bit of wear visible on his neck, while the centering is pushed to the upper left on a card typically seen with centering issues. A lower right corner tip can be seen, while the other three have come through the years nicely. The reverse has a wax stain visible along the bottom as oriented here, and a black print smudge, not too prevalent, near the number. This is a fine example of the Say Hey Kid’s first Topps card, one of the keys to the most popular postwar baseball issue. MINIMUM BID: $2,500
