A CURATED SELECTION OF GREAT CARDS
17. 1887 N693 Kalamazoo Bats Teams Detroit B.B.C. - SGC FR 1.5 - Multiple HOFers!
18. 1896-97 Whitehead & Hoag (Cameo Pepsin) Buck Ewing (HOF) - PSA NM 7 - Highest Graded!
Exceedingly scarce pin from the 1896-97 Whitehead & Hoag set, commonly known as “Cameo Pepsin” due to the advertisement sometimes present on the reverse of the pins (though the pins are often found with or without Cameo Pepsin advertising). The first large set of pins to feature baseball players, more than 140 subjects are known and more are added to the checklist as
Issued in 1887 by Charles Gross & Co. of Philadelphia as a promotion for Kalamazoo Bats Cigarettes, the N693 team cards are extremely rare today. Six team cards were issued in total, bearing a resemblance in design to the single-player N690 Kalamazoo Bats cards. The studio photo pictures the members of the 1887 World Champion Detroit Wolverines, including Lady Baldwin, Charles Bennett, Fatty Briody, Dan Brouthers (HOF), Fred Dunlap, Charles Ganzel, Charles Getzien, Ned Hanlon (HOF), Hardy Richardson, Jack Rowe, Billy Shindle, Sam Thompson (HOF), Larry Twitchell, Bill Watkins (manager, in street clothes), Deacon White (HOF), and Stump Wiedman. Considered among the more rare of the N693 cards, just six examples have been graded by SGC and PSA combined, this example grading FAIR 1.5, primarily due to pencil writing and mild staining on the reverse. The card front presents extremely well, despite some surface abrasions and mild creasing at the edges, and a small spot of paper loss at the bottom right border. An extremely scarce card featuring four Hall of Famers.
they are discovered. Typically subject to image fading and other condition flaws due to age, the pins are quite condition sensitive today. Presented here is a stunning example featuring Hall of Famer Buck Ewing, recently graded NM 7 by PSA. Though some mild foxing and wear are apparent, particularly near the top of the pin, the image and text are clear and crisp, with very little wear visible. The reverse boasts a clean Cameo Pepsin advertisement, with a few touches of patina visible on the pin and collet. The highest- grade example from this set that we have ever handled, this is the highest-grade Ewing assessed by PSA, and one of just 6 pins to grade this high in total , with but one example graded higher. Simply extraordinary.
