Love of the Game Auctions Fall, 2023 Premier Auction

Pictured near the start of an almost 70-year career in baseball, Clark Griffith would be a pitcher, manager, team president and owner during his lifetime, elected to the Hall of Fame in 1946. This attractive card was graded PR 1 by PSA due largely to some cracking of the photographic emulsion at the bottom-right, which results in paper loss at the corner. When held at an angle, the cracking continues in the form of surface wrinkling along the entire right edge of the card. However, the wrinkling is very difficult to see, and the remaining wear is minor, restricted to the periphery of the card. Aesthetically pleasing, a tougher Hall of Famer from this landmark set. 28. 1887 N172 Old Judge #201-4 Clark Griffith (HOF) - PSA PR 1 MINIMUM BID: $1,500

30. 1887 N172 Old Judge #254-2 King Kelly (HOF) - PSA VG-EX 4

Extraordinary portrait image of “$10,000 Kelly” from the “Script Series” of Old Judges produced in 1886/87. Freshly-graded by PSA, this is the highest-grade example of this pose in their population report, though there remains at least one Kelly card graded EX 5 tat could be of this same pose (the pose is not identified, as PSA has not always been this detailed in their pop reports). Regardless, the card is sharp and clean, with a stellar image boasting clear detail and better than average image quality for the issue. Kelly was

sold to Boston for $10,000 in February of 1887, though he is still pictured in his Chicago uniform in this image. A particularly high- grade example of one of the most popular and desirable of all Old Judge cards.

MINIMUM BID: $1,000

29. 1887 N172 Old Judge #251-5 Tim Keefe (HOF) - PSA VG 3

One of three different N172 cards featuring Hall of Famer Tommy McCarthy in a sliding pose, this example, card #301-1, boasts an exceptional image with very little overall wear. The qualifier assessed by PSA speaks to a small “X” written in ink at the top-right corner of the reverse. Light soiling is visible on the otherwise blank reverse. An example of a Type B card of the “0” numbered series of 1887, this is the very same card pictured as the exemplar for card #301-1 in The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin & Company (1886-1890) , the hobby’s premiere reference tool for this issue. 31. 1887 N172 Old Judge #301-1 Tommy McCarthy (HOF) - PSA EX 5(MK) MINIMUM BID: $750

Winner of 342 games over a 14- year career, Hall of Fame pitcher Tim Keefe won 30 games or more in six consecutive seasons, falling just short of a seventh due to a two-week salary holdout in 1889. One of the more popular players of his era, Keefe is beginning to see respect in the hobby; an EX condition N172 Keefe eclipsed $10,000 at public auction earlier this year. This example is quite strong, with a clear, well-defined image, strong centering, and just moderate wear and soiling at the corners and edges. The reverse

exhibits visible soiling, far less notable on the front.

MINIMUM BID: $1,500
