A CURATED SELECTION OF GREAT CARDS
32. 1887 N172 Old Judge Cigarettes #317-5 Bid McPhee (HOF) - SGC VG 3
One of Famers in the N172 issue, Hoss Radbourn is featured with no fewer than six different poses in the set, this portrait second only to his “obscene gesture” pose in terms of overall desirability. An 1887 “Type B” card from the “0” numbered series, the card has been graded VG 3 by PSA. Exhibiting overall wear with a few minor spots of foxing and some moderate toning, the image remains clear and visible. A difficult card, one of the more recognizable images from the set and certainly one of Radbourn’s more iconic. 34. 1887 N172 Old Judge #377-6 Old Hoss Radbourn (HOF) - PSA VG 3 MINIMUM BID: $2,500 of the more challenging Hall
John “Bid” McPhee saw action at second base over eighteen major league seasons, all in Cincinnati, albeit in two different leagues. Elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 2000, a mere 101 years after he hung up his spikes, McPhee was known for his defensive prowess and unimpeachable personal character, and was a long time favorite in the Queen City. Cards of McPhee are highly prized by advanced collectors, as he is among the
toughest Hall of Famers in the N172 issue, and there are no other cardboard options for hobbyists seeking a card from his playing career. This example, freshly graded by SGC, has been assessed as VG 3, with square corners, some minor surface wear and corner chipping, and a bit of foxing visible. The image contrast is quite strong for the issue, a very desirable and difficult to find card.
MINIMUM BID: $2,500
33. 1887 N172 Old Judge #355-3 Hank O’Day (HOF) - PSA GOOD 2
Gorgeous card of Hall of Famer Hank O’Day, the only man in history to play, umpire and manage in the National League. O’Day was an umpire in the first World Series in 1903, along with nine more Series during his 35-year career. It was O’Day that made what is still probably the most famous “out” call in history - the one where Hall of Famer Johnny Evers produced the baseball and stepped on second base, forcing out Fred Merkel in that infamous 1908 game. O’Day was also a serviceable pitcher in his younger years, compiling a 73-110 record over a 7-year career lasting from 1884 to 1890. O’Day pitched for the great 1889 Giants team that featured such luminaries as Buck Ewing, Jim O’Rourke, John Montgomery Ward, Roger Connor, Tim eefe and Mickey Welch - one of the most famous 19th Century baseball teams. The card boasts strong eye appeal with a crisp, well-defined image. Corner and edge wear is visible but light, the primary flaw relating to a horizontal crease that traverses the card about 2/3 of the way down, on the reverse. On the front, the crease appears as a very minor bend in the surface of the photographic paper, the damage clearly done to the cardboard backing and not the card itself. Exceptional eye appeal on a desirable Hall of Famer.
