Collector-grade example of one of the most rare of all Old Judge Hall of Famers, picturing Hall of Fame pitcher Amos Rusie. Graded PR 1 by PSA, the card is subject to image fading and foxing that is frequently seen with the i issue, with significant paper remnants on the reverse, the result of scrapbook removal. Of all the Hall of Famers issued throughout the N172 set, only Bid McPhee and

Gorgeous portrait card of popular Hall of Famer John Montgomery Ward. While not particularly scarce as far as Old Judges are concerned, his cards are still highly sought after, the demand far eclipsing the supply. In addition, this particular example pictures Ward out of uniform - N172s depicting players in “street clothes” are a popular subset among collectors, and this is no exception. Boasting wonderful contrast and image clarity, virtually all the issues resulting in the low technical grade relate to the reverse, which exhibits significant staining and

Wilbert Robinson are considered more scarce than Rusie. Though the card is of lower technical grade, the scarcity more than makes up for it, a highly sought-after card in any grade. 36. 1887 N172 Old Judge #456-1 Sam Thompson (HOF) - PSA VG-EX 4(MK) MINIMUM BID: $300

foxing. A tiny surface abrasion at the bottom center has resulted in a small spot of paper loss, barely visible but possibly the result of a tiny pinhole. Otherwise, however, the image quality is exceptional for the issue, clear and dark, with a clean surface, square corners and strong centering. With eye appeal far in excess of the technical grade, one of the most desirable cards from one of the era’s most significant figures.

38. 1887 N172 Old Judge #478-8 John Ward (HOF) - PSA PR 1(MK)

Big Sam Thompson was one of the game’s first great sluggers, with a whopping (for the time) 126 career home runs. His 166 RBI in 1887 was a record that stood until it was broken by Babe Ruth in 1921, and at the time of his retirement he was second on the career home runs list. Additionally, Thompson was part of the only all- .400 hitting outfield of all time, alongside Tuck Turner

Horizontal Old Judge card of Hall of Famer John Montgomery Ward, one of the most popular players of his day and possibly the most influential player of the 19th Century. Ward led the formation of the first player’s union, and also orchestrated the establishment of the Player’s League. Originally a pitcher, he moved to shortstop after throwing his arm out. Ward married actress Helen Dauvray, who donated the game’s first Championship trophy, named the Dauvray Cup. Catalogued as pose #478-8 in the N172 issue according to The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin and Company , the card has been graded PR 1 (MK) by PSA. Though the card does exhibit significant wear, the most visible wear lies at the left edge, and not as much within the image area. Pencil writing on the reverse accounts for the qualifier; some adhesive staining and foxing on the reverse contribute to the grade as well. Despite the low technical grade, a desirable horizontal card of an important Hall of Famer.

(.416), Ed Delahanty (.407) and Billy Hamilton (.404). The card pictures Thompson with Detroit, dating it to 1887-88. Graded VG-EX 4 (MK) by PSA, the eye appeal is extremely strong, with a clear, well-defined image and very little surface and edge wear. Some light soiling is visible on the reverse, likely responsible for a slight reduction in technical grade, as the card does boast an EX appearance. A small “X” written on the top of the reverse accounts for the qualifier assessed by PSA. It should be noted that this is the very card pictured as the exemplar for card #456-1 in The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin & Company .
