A CURATED SELECTION OF GREAT CARDS
39. 1909 E101 Christy Mathewson (HOF) - PSA GOOD 2
41. 1901 M128 Police Gazette Supplements Christy Mathewson (HOF RC)
The earliest known collectible of Christy Mathewson is his 1901 Police Gazette supplement. Published by National Police Gazette each supplement was numbered based on the issue number in which it was included which enables the individual 11 1/4”” x 16 1/4” supplements to be dated despite the issue being produced over a sixteen-year period. This example is a variation that does include the tag line underneath Matty’s name.
MINIMUM BID: $2,500 Bright and cleancaramel card of Christy Mathewson, with an extra “t’ thrown into his last name for effect! This image has always mesmerized collectors, with its rolling bands of color and Matty’s confident pose all adding up to one fine piece of old cardboard. Product staining is seen in the lower border as oriented, with some creasing seen coming in from the right side and rounded corners are present. The surface remains bright and the card is well-proportioned. The reverse is foxed in several swaths and there is a slight loss of ink on he word “BALL” but for the grade, this is an extremely strong specimen.
Trimmed on all four sides, the piece measures 9 3/8” x 13 7/8” and exhibits some wear including wrinkles and stains and some edge tears, notably at the top right. The reverse is lightly toned, with some clear tape affixed at the top in three areas to repair small tears and pinholes, and one piece of clear tape folded at the center. Still, a very scarce piece in high demand, representing the earliest known collectible of one of the hobby’s greats.
MINIMUM BID: $500
