43. W600 Sporting Life Cabinets Mordecai Brown (HOF) - PSA VG+ 3.5
The Sporting Life W600 cabinet cards, distributed over a span of ten years commencing in 1902, are a sprawling issue of cabinets offered as a premium by the Sporting Life newspaper. With more than 700 known subjects featuring the work of the renowned Boston photographer Carl Horner, the set is known today for its quality, stunning portraits and impressive scarcity. As this attractive Three Finger Brown shows, a black-and-white photo is framed using a light olive green theme, which includes an ornate advertisement at the bottom. Based upon the Type 4 designation, the card was issued in 1904 or later. The frame to photo proportions are such that the images often remain free of corner dings and wear along the edges. That is indeed the case here, where the corners have worn a bit and rounded, although not excessively so. One small paper fleck in the upper left background of the photo can be seen, along with some light print snow in a couple of spots. The reverse is well-preserved and has just the slightest hints of foxing. There are but four examples of this pose - Brown’s more desirable uniform shot - in the PSA population report.
MINIMUM BID: $2,500
44. 1910 PC796 Sepia Postcards Christy Mathewson (HOF) - SGC GOOD+ 2.5
A striking example of the legendary Honus Wagner, from the difficult PC 796 Sepia Postcard set. Featuring 25 ballplayers from 1910, the superb photography gives these PC’s a real presence, as you can see here with Wagner’s batting pose on full display. A chop out of the right corner is seen, with a couple small spots of foxing on the obverse, while the reverse is written upon and postally used, postmarked June 8, 1911. Technical grade aside, this is a card that presents very well, the technical grade primarily resultant from the postal use and corner clip. One of the keys to this popular postcard issue, seldom available at public auction. 45. 1910 PC796 Sepia Postcard Honus Wagner (HOF) - SGC POOR 1 MINIMUM BID: $1,000
The PC796 Sepia Postcard set consists of 25 subjects, printed by an unknown manufacturer. The cards feature, as noted, sepia photographs, a bit mild in tone, with some aggressive outlining resulting in a stark, yet appealing image being revealed. There’s a load of Hall of Fame players included, Mathewson being one of the most prominent. The SGC grade of 2.5 seems a tad harsh, as the postcard looks nice overall, with nice centering and a clean appearance. The corners exhibit light rounding and the postally unused and ink-free address side looks clean
as well, with some light but even toning.
