531. 1956 Topps Complete Set (340)

The 1956 Topps baseball set was the company’s last issue to utilize the 2 5/8” x 3 3/4” format, as the 1957 set was shrunk slightly to today’s standard size. The issue was similar in design to the 1955 set, but was significantly larger in terms of number of cards. While the 1955 set is landmark due to the popularity of that season and the number of important rookie cards in that set, the 1956 set gains its popularity from the beauty of design and the large number of stars and Hall of Famers included. This complete set of 340 cards is a clean, collector-grade set, fairly consistent in appearance. The cards boast strong color and registration, but the hallmarks of handling reduce the technical grade. A condition breakdown of the entire set might be 3% EX, 16% VG/EX, 33% VG, 30% GOOD, 15% FAIR and 4% POOR. Nine

of the key cards have been graded by PSA, as follows: #30 Robinson (PSA VG-EX 4 MC), #31 Aaron (PSA VG-EX 4), #79 Koufax (PSA VG-EX 4), #101 Campanella (PSA VG 3 MK), #107 Mathews (PSA EX-MT 6 OC), #110 Berra (PSA VG 3), #130 Mays (PSA VG-EX 4), #135 Mantle (PSA VG-EX 4), and #292 Aparicio (PSA EX 5 MC). The remaining key cards grade as follows: Checklist #1 (SGC FR 1.5), Checklist #2 (SGC GOOD 2), #10 Spahn (VG), #15 Banks (G), #20 Kaline (F - Writing on reverse), #113 Rizzuto (G), #118 Fox (VG), #120 Ashburn (F), #125 Minoso (F), #145 Hodges (VG), #164 Killebrew (F), #165 Schoendienst (G), #180 Roberts (VG), #187 Wynn (F), #194 Irvin (G), #200 Feller (G), #255 Lemon (G), #260 Reese (F), #307 Wilhelm (F). A strong, collector-grade set, an excellent example of one of Topps’ most beautiful issues of the decade. 340 cards total.
