553. 1963 Topps Complete Set (576)
554. 1964 Topps Complete Set (587)
Clean and colorful midgrade complete set, grading approximately 3% EX-MT, 8$ EX ,23% VG/EX, 39% VG, 24% GOOD, and 3% lesser. The cards are mostly bright, with honest wear at the corners and edges reducing the technical grades in places, and typical Topps quality control reducing it in others. Largely, however, the set boasts strong eye appeal, an outstanding example of a “collector’s set.” Six cards have been graded by PSA, as follows: #200 Mantle (PSA EX 5), #390 Aaron (PSA VG-EX 4), #300 Mays (PSA EX-MT 6), #540 Clemente (PSA EX 5), #553 Stargell (PSA VG 3) and #537 Rose (PSA EX 5 MK). The remaining keys grade as follows: #25 Kaline (VG-EX), #108 Wilhelm (VG), #115 Yastrzemski (VG), #134 Ashburn (G), #138 Mays/Musial (VG/EX), #173 Bombers’ Best (G), #190 Minoso (EX), #210 Koufax (G), #353 Banks/Aaron (G), #250 Musial (VG/EX), #275 Mathews (VG/EX), #320 Spahn (VG), #323 Mazeroski (EX), #340 Berra (VG), #345 B. Robinson (VG), #353 B. Williams (VG/EX), #360 Drysdale (VG/EX), #380 Banks (G), #400 F. Robinson (VG), #415 Gibson (VG), #440 Marichal (VG/ EX), #446 Ford (VG/EX), #472 Brock (VG), #490 McCovey (G), #500 Killebrew (G), #520 Cepeda (VG-EX). A tremendous set, an outstanding effort on the part of Topps to incorporate color and brightness into their designs after the dull 1962 issue. 576 cards total.
One of the most overlooked and yet attractive Topps issues of the 1960s, the 1964 set is characterized by beautiful, crisp photography and a clean, minimalistic layout. Similar in simplicity to the beloved 1967 issue, the cards feature full-color portrait or posed photos set against crisp, white backgrounds with colorful typography at the top and bottom borders. Known for difficulty with centering, the borderless cards are often found on the verge of being miscut, making extremely high-grade sets difficult. This example is an attractive, crease-free midgrade set, with a condition breakdown of approximately 2% NM or better, 7% EX/MT, 26% EX, 42% VG/EX, 23% VG, and a few lesser. Nine key cards have been traded by PSA, as follows: #21 Berra (PSA VG-EX 4), #50 Mantle (PSA VG 3), #150 Mays (PSA EX- MT 6), #200 Koufax (PSA NM-MT 8), #210 Yastrzemski (PSA EX 5), #260 F. Robinson (PSA EX-MT 6), #300 Aaron (PSA EX-MT 6), #440 Clemente (PSA VG-EX 4) and #541 Niekro (PSA EX 5). Additional keys grade as follows: #13 Wilhelm (VG-EX), #29 Brock (VG-EX), #35 Mathews (VG), #55 Banks (VG-EX), #120 Drysdale (EX), #125 Rose (EX), #155 Snider (VG-EX), #175 B. Williams (VG-EX), #230 B. Robinson (VG-EX), #250 Kaline (VG-EX), #280 Marichal (VG-EX), #300 Mays/Cepeda (VG), #331 AL Bombers (VG-EX), #342 Stargell (VG), #350 McCovey VG-EX), #380 Ford (EX), #400 Spahn (EX), #423 Aaron/Mays (VG), #460 Gibson (VG), #468 Perry (VG), #538 Minoso (VG-EX). 587 cards total.
