Autumn Tips From Anthony’s Lawn Care SWEATER WEATHER AND PERFECT YARDS
Fall is an absolutely beautiful time of year here. Bloomington is a Tree City, so you can spot the changing colors on the leaves just about everywhere in town. The temperature gets a bit cooler, but not too cold, and seasonal decorations are starting to go up. The crew at Anthony’s Lawn Care loves working during autumn because we enjoy some of that sweater weather and a busy season for gardening and landscaping.
many of you may have noticed the signs that it’s time for a tree removal project or some serious pruning. It’s best to take a preventive approach so you don’t have to remove trees later. Though you cannot plant everything during the fall, certain species and varieties of plants will actually do better at this time of year. We usually have an optimal planting period during the fall. So, from late September to around early November, there’s a window of time when you have another chance to plant some lovely shrubs or certain vegetables like spinach and radishes.
Sept. 22 is the official first day of fall, and not only is it an excellent time to enjoy the mild weather and orange leaves, it’s also a great second chance to finish up any gardening tasks you might have missed in the spring and summer. Fall is really important to us because it’s a great time of year to work in the yard. It’s the best time to install seed, straw, or sod to repair any bare spots in the lawn, and it’s an excellent opportunity to trim your shrubs. The fall and winter months
While spring is usually a busy time for us, we also have a fall rush when lots of people sign up for tree trimming, plantings, shrub replacements, and lawn repair. I’ve found that the best time to get all these major gardening chores done is before the calendar fills up for
are wonderful for pruning trees, too. Around this time, many bugs that could infest your trees start to go dormant, as do the trees themselves. Trimming now gives your trees a chance to heal and experience less shock. Doing so means they less likely to get infected with insects, and are also less likely to get other diseases that are common during the hot summer months. It’s essential to trim dead limbs and remove dead trees before the winter starts. Heavy snow or high winds can cause additional damage to trees when the weather gets stormy. I’ve seen firsthand how quickly strong winds can rip trees from the ground or topple them onto roofs. I prefer small to medium-sized trees in my yard because I don’t like anything around my house that could crush it. Toward the end of the summer,
the holiday season. It will save you a headache to complete your yard work before Thanksgiving and Christmas when
family members visit.

HOW TO SAFEGUARD YOUR TREES THIS SEASON
Most of the apples you find in stores are ripening now, making September prime apple-picking season! When green apples begin to turn yellow and red apples brighten in color, they are ready to be gathered up. If you are looking for a great excuse to get out in nature with your family or just hankering for some fresh produce, then apple picking is the thing for you. Orchards all over the country have a you-pick season so you can bring home your own fresh apples. Here is how to get in on the apple- picking trend right now! HOW DO YOU LIKE THEM APPLES? If you and your kids aren’t paying to pick apples, and you don’t have the owner’s permission, that’s stealing. If you (or someone else) pay your kids to pick apples, that is child labor, which is, sadly, also illegal. Kidding aside, for the most part, to pick apples at an orchard, you must pay for the privilege. Orchards all across the country have different varieties of apples ripening all the time. Whether you’re in Maine, Michigan, California, or somewhere in between, you are likely ready to go on an apple- picking frenzy with family! ENJOY THE FRUITS OF YOUR LABOR. After a long day of picking apples and making memories, you need a place to put them. Sure, if you want to dig into your apples right away, a bowl on the counter is fine. But if you want to store these apples for safekeeping (or making pie, apple crisp, apple sauce, or myriad other things), keep them somewhere nice and cool, like a refrigerator. If you keep your apples cool, they’ll stay good for weeks, ensuring you can enjoy the fruits of your labor all month! APPLE PICKING WITH THE WHOLE FAMILY
The changing colors of the leaves on the trees signal the fall season, but underneath that beautiful canopy, your trees could fall prey to pests or insects. Protecting your trees in fall is essential to ensure they remain healthy and vibrant through the winter months. From savvy strategies to ward off common culprits like aphids and spider mites to preventive measures that keep your plants in top shape, let’s explore the best ways to protect your trees from pests this fall. TRIM YOUR TREES. Trimming or pruning trees is essential to ensuring they live a long, healthy life. When you trim away branches, you improve airflow and get rid of dead or diseased portions of the tree, which can infect the rest of the plant. Dead and dry branches can often attract insects, so remove anything that is no longer healthy. KEEP YOUR YARD TIDY. Keeping your yard tidy is crucial, especially if you have fallen branches or plant debris from storms or pruning. Common tree pests like beetles and aphids feed on moist wood, so clean up any clutter or dead plants around your trees to keep these insects at bay. USE NATURAL DETERRENTS. You may be able to fight bugs with more bugs. Several types of insects are beneficial for trees, partly because they eat bugs like mites and aphids that damage your plants. You can plant specific flowers and herbs to attract ladybugs, which will naturally decrease the number of insects feeding on your trees. By taking these simple yet effective steps, you can ensure your trees stay healthy and pest-free through the fall season and beyond. Pruning, tidying up your yard, and using natural deterrents will help your trees withstand the challenges of autumn and enter winter strong. So, as you enjoy the vibrant fall foliage, remember that a bit of prevention goes a long way in keeping your trees safe from pesky invaders.

BOOST YOUR GARDEN WITH NATIVE PLANTS
Some of the most vibrant plants and flowers could be growing right in your backyard. Native plants are the superheroes of the gardening world, perfectly adapted
MIMIC NATURE IN YOUR DESIGN. When designing your native plant garden, look to nature for inspiration. You want to lay out your yard in a way that is visually pleasing and cohesive and makes sense for how these plants naturally grow in the wild. Ensure that you place native plants in locations with the specific conditions where they will grow best. For example, plants that require a lot of sun should sit in the sunniest places in your garden. You can group the same species of plants to help attract more pollinators and create visual appeal. GIVE THEM PROPER CARE. Just because native plants fend for themselves in the wild doesn’t mean you can plant them and walk away. Establishing new plants takes extra work while the root systems fully develop. Ensure you water your plants regularly and remove any invasive species or weeds. It can be helpful to initially put tags around your native plants, especially small wildflowers or grasses, so you don’t accidentally pull or remove them. By incorporating native plants into your landscape, you’re beautifying your garden and contributing to a healthier ecosystem. With a bit of research, thoughtful design, and proper care, your garden will become a vibrant, sustainable paradise that reflects the natural beauty of your region.

Explore London’s Quirky Corners THE FIRST PUBLIC DRINKING FOUNTAIN London is home to perhaps the most fascinating water fountain in the world. This simple granite basin, built in 1859 and adorned with the words “Replace the cup,” was the first public water fountain. Before then, water was precious, monopolized by water companies, rare to come by, and undrinkable. As people pushed for public access to water, a philanthropist named Samuel Gurney created this fountain, attached to the gates of the St. Sepulchre- without-Newgate Church on Holborn Hill. It became an instant hit. An estimated 7,000 people would stop for a drink daily when it first hit the scene. The city has many hidden treasures, whether you hope to catch a vampire in one of London’s historic cemeteries or sip on a culturally esteemed drink.
