Pointers on the Lesson This lesson affords the teacher an op portunity to emphasize the truth that the Holy Spirit is a Person, as are God the Father and God the Son. Many people have had the false idea that the Holy Spirit is sort of an influence which some how gets a hold of men, or an impersonal power which enters lives to quicken them. But the Holy Spirit is a real and won derful P e r s o n a lit y , another One like Jesus (John 14:16), who comes to make His home in believing hearts. There is much scriptural evidence for this fact. Personal pronouns are applied to Him; personal attributes are ascribed to Him; personal offices belong to Him. All the characteristics of personality are to be found in Him. Thus our study this week has to do with the Third Person of the Godhead. One who knows Him and yields to Him will realize the omnipotence of God. T he P romise of the H oly S pirit (J ohn 14:25, 26) Just before the Lord Jesus Christ went to Calvary, He told His disciples of the coming of “ the Comforter.” The literal translation of this name is, “ one called alongside to help.” In verse 16 of this chapter, the Lord announced that this One to come would abide with His dis ciples forever. Christ stated that the Holy Spirit would perform two minis tries: teach all things and bring to re membrance everything Jesus had said. Every believer has the privilege of the blessed Holy Spirit as his Teacher. He need not be enrolled in a college or uni versity for this instruction. The require ment for matriculation is a yielded spirit. No matter how illiterate or underpriv ileged qne may be from the world’s viewpoint, he will be taught truths of eternal value if he allows the Spirit to instruct Him. Furthermore, the Holy Spirit will continue all through the life of the believer to bring to his remem brance, when needed, those treasures of truth which have been revealed to him previously. What every soul needs to be concerned about is that the things Jesus has said, and the Word of God as a whole, be stored in his heart day by day so that in time of need the Spirit of God can call them to remembrance. A thing cannot be recalled which has never, been known. T he C oming of the H oly S pirit (A cts 2 :1-4) We are not to suppose that the Holy Spirit had never been in the world until Pentecost. He was present in the lives of the Old Testament saints. He always has been in the world. But at Pentecost, He came to abide forever with His saints (John 14:16). He came to form a new body which is the church (1 Cor. 1.2:13). Pentecost was the b ir t h d a y o f the J A N U A R Y , 1 9 4 8
church. It is not surprising, therefore, that such an important event should have been accompanied by miraculous signs: wind, fire, and voices. On that re markable day, the little band of believ ers were baptized or immersed into a new body and the Spirit of God took up His permanent abode in believing hearts. Compare Acts 1:5. T he F illing of the H oly S pirit (A cts 4:31b) The filling of the Holy Spirit spoken of in this passage was not another baptism as on the day o f Pentecost. The Chris tians were filled anew. God’s command to believers is not to be baptized, but to be filled with the Spirit (Eph. 5:18). Bap tism by the Holy Spirit is that initial act of the Spirit whereby believers are immersed into the body of Christ (1 Cor. 12:13). This happens but once. But a Christian has need for many fresh fill ings of the Spirit. On the occasion here mentioned, the filling of the Spirit was manifested by the disciples’ boldness in declaring the Word of God. T he F ruit of the H oly S pirit (G al . 5:22-26) These verses show what kind of per son will be produced when he is fully yielded to the Spirit of God. All the virtues presented here as the fruit of the Spirit in their perfection are really but a portrayal of Christ Himself. What God wants to see in all of His followers is likeness to His Son. In fact, His plan for believers is that they “ be conformed to the image of his Son” (Rom. 8:29). This will be perfectly accomplished in the day of His Second Appearing (1 John 3:2) but much o f that likeness should be manifested now. M emory V erse : “ Wait on the Lord: be of .good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord” (Psalm 27:14). As Peter and John were entering the temple of prayer, they saw a lame man begging at the temple gate. Peter said to the man, “ In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk.” Imme diately the cripple leaped up and walked into the temple, praising God. People gathered to see what had happened. Bold ly Peter preached to them about God and His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. When Peter mentioned the resurrection o f Jesus from the dead, the religious leaders of the Jews were very angry and so they put him and John into prison. The next morning, the Holy Spirit gave Peter the courage again to talk fearlessly With the rulers about the Saviour.
