Inclination – The most recent Inclination measurement taken by the RST directional package is sent, this is of high importance when utilizing and observing the effectiveness of the RST inclination hold steering modes. An acceptable range for the inclination is within +/- 1.0 deg of the inclination that is set via the downlink. If the inclination sent falls outside of +/- 1.0 deg, or is progressively moving away from the desired inclination, this indicates that the tool is not steering effectively, and further measures should be taken to correct. Delta Azimuth – The delta azimuth is used to monitor the change in azimuth as the tool steers, the value has a range between +6.4 and -6.4 indicating whether the RST is turning right or left respectively. Due to the harshness of the downhole drilling environment, and vibration experienced by the RST tool, the azimuth reading is not accurate enough to be relied upon and should not be taken as an indication of tool performance. Generator Voltage – The generator voltage has an ideal range of 40-50v prior to downlinking, if the voltage drops to below 35v the tool will not receive sufficient power and will stop steering, above 62.6v the tool will enter a failsafe mode and shutdown to prevent damage. The generator voltage is correlated with the RST turbine RPM, therefore any change in flowrate should result in an appropriate increase/decrease in generator voltage. If generator voltage is slowly decreasing this can be an indication of possible generator invasion, which will result in poor RST performance. Collar RPM – This is an average RPM value that the RST records and has a range of 90-330 RPM, the minimum value transmitted is 90 RPM therefore this will substitute any rotation values below 90 RPM. The RST has an upper RPM limit of 330 RPM, rotation above this will result in reduced tool performance and damage to the tool, remedial action must be taken to reduce tool RPM.
