HAWKESBURY | A new Ontario Provincial Police Street Crime Unit is rapidly making its presence felt in Hawkesbury. Comprised of officers targeting problem areas in town, since the beginning of Janu- ary the unit members have made eight arrests and laid 15 criminal charges. Most charges are related to thefts, drug activi- ties and infractions of court conditions. The mandate of this special unit is to fight crime in order to improve the safety of local busi- nesses and the town in large. You can make a difference and help the Street Crime Team. about any criminal matters, call Crime Stop- pers at 1-800-222-8477 or the Hawkesbury O.P.P. at 613-632-2729. Tips can also be sent via text message and e-mail to Crime Stoppers at www.CrimeStoppers.ca. The information will be forwarded to the Street Crime Team for intervention. In the week of January 7 to 14, the O.P.P. detachment responded to 224 occurrences and laid 33 charges. Officers investigated seven break and enters, eight thefts, four assaults. Nine RIDE initiatives were con- ducted. There was one impaired driving- related charge laid.
