taught to do personal work. They are taught the songs of the Lord which they sing heartily. The gospel effort is stressed clearly and the babes in Christ are taught at once God’s ways. The Customs of the Church As in all cases and countries, the cus toms of the people enter largely into the church ministry. At the baptismal serv ice in Jamaica, all the candidates wear white garments. This is emblematic of the fact that theft- souls have been washed white in the blood of the Lamb. The elders and those who serve at the Lord’s Table wear white. This, too, is typical of their spiritual welfare. The natives walk barefoot to church, then sit down in the yard and put on their shoes and stockings. This represents an un usually holy walk in the house of God. Let me not kneel and pray, Forego some trifle every day, Fast . . . and take sacrament . . . And then Lend tongue to slander, hold ancient grudge, deny The very Lord whom I would glorify. Let me keep Lent, Let my heart grow in grace, Let Thy light shine till my illumined face Shall be a testament Read by all men That hate is buried; self, crucified; new-born The spirit that shall rise on Easter morn. —Elizabeth Bradley Read.
