SALMON & VEGGIES One-Pan

Who Runs the World? THE FIELD OF DENTISTRY EXPERIENCES BIG LEADERSHIP CHANGES This year, the American Dental Association (ADA) celebrates a milestone. There are 13 women serving as presidents of their state dental associations — the most in the ADA’s 160-year history. In 2009, there was only one woman serving as president of a state dental association. A decade later, the growing number of women in general leadership is starting to reflect the growing number of women in the field of dentistry. Forty years ago, only 7 percent of the students graduating from dental school were women. In 2017, women made up 49 percent of dental school graduates. More voices and perspectives in leadership benefit all members of an organization. As more women enter dentistry, it becomes even more important for women to find themselves in leadership roles. As Dr. Kristi M. Soileau, Louisiana Dental Association president-elect, says, “As more women graduate and enter the field, their particular needs, such as balancing a career and family, are often understood by other women who have been in similar positions of duress.”

This is something we can relate to at the Morning Glory Women Dentists Network of New Jersey. Our mission is to support women

professionals in the dental field and help them face the challenges that come with leadership.

Dentistry is also seeing some changes

in representation at the state level. At the end of March, the New Jersey Senate passed legislation that will add a dental assistant to the NJ State Board of Dentistry. This is a first, and advocates for the bill have claimed that dental assistants have had no representation on the board until now. However, the New Jersey Dental Association has gone on record to oppose the bill, stating that “dental assistants largely lack the knowledge and understanding of complex dental cases to materially improve public protection.”

Dr. Hung’s practice, Prospect Oral Surgery Center, celebrated its 10th anniversary. Mayor Gerald W. Tamburro conducted a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday, April 9, at the Centrastate Medical Arts Building. Thank you for your continued support over the years! It’s clear that leadership in the field of dentistry is changing. What do you think of these changes?
