3 GENERATIONS OF EXPERIENCE IN AGRICULTURAL MACHINERY www.johnbownes.co.uk

Exciting Times Ahead for John Bownes Ltd in 2017!

www. johnbownes . co.uk

A BRIEF HISTORY OF JOHN BOWNES John Bownes Limited is a family run business dealing in farm tractors and machinery dedicated to providing a good quality service to all our customers. We have a plan for continued growth and development by supplying and servicing quality products. We also maintain a friendly, fair, and creative work environment, which respects diversity, new ideas and hard work. The ‘Bownes’ family have been in business for over 100 years. We started off with shops in the high street in our local town of Winsford. As the next generation took over the business, changes were made to suit the customers’ needs and allow the company to expand into different areas. The agricultural part of the business started life under the name of E H Bownes & Son which was ‘Ted’ Bownes and his son J E Bownes. In later years other members of the family joined the business and in 1979 upon the death of Ted Bownes the company became limited and changed its trading name to John Bownes Ltd. The company was then owned by 3 shareholders, J E Bownes, Mrs E M Bownes and J C Bownes. In later years Mrs E M Bownes transfered her shares and passed them to her grandson J D Bownes. The business has seen many changes, and in the early years we dealt in small agricultural sundry items, with a few farm machines and second-hand tractors. The business then gained various new machinery franchises and a new IMT tractor franchise. The business maintained the IMT tractor franchise for a number of years but it didn’t last. We then became Roadless Tractor dealers but only for a short while as the Roadless business dissolved shortly after we became agents. After a gap of a number of years we were appointed Renault

John C Bownes recently commented on the following: 2016 Business And Trading Results Although 2016 has been a difficult year with generally poor returns for our farming customers, I am pleased to report a significant increase in our turn-over. It is difficult to ascertain why exactly (Brexit?), but we remain optimistic for the future with both milk and grain prices promising to be better this year. Farmers do still appear to be investing in bigger and better machinery with the running and service costs now being included into the finance calculations. JCB Agriculture - New Appointment in 2017 We are extremely pleased and excited to have been appointed as JCB Agricultural dealers from 1st January 2017. This will fit in very well with our current range of franchises and will be a major factor of the company’s overall expansion plans. We currently have new and demonstration machines in stock or on order with a high level of enquiries, so please contact us sooner rather than later - we are very keen to secure orders! Investment Plans With the business developing we will be investing in all aspects of the business. This will include computers and telephones, commercial vehicles and vans, parts and machinery stock, plus a general “re-vamping” of the premises. Most important will be the appointment of extra service and parts staff coupled with the all important training requirements, which is absolutely essential for our ongoing commitment for customer care. We have also recently been joined by Gary Bailey in our sales department, who is well known and respected throughout the industry, having gained several years of experience with a leading grass and forage equipment supplier - Krone UK. Parts and Service Departments

Tractor dealers in 1988 which was developed into an important part of the business. Unfortunately, Renault were then purchased by Claas and we subsequently lost the dealership. Later in 2005 we were appointed with the Valtra Tractor franchise and have now become the UK’s leading Valtra dealer. Agco UK also appointed us as a sub dealer for Fendt tractors in 2012. In 2016 we started selling the New Solis compact tractor range combined with additional compact machinery. This forms part of our new small holders section which we will be developing in the future with other leading suppliers. On 1st January 2017 we will be officially appointed as a JCB Agri- dealer. This is a key appointment for the company and we will be investing significantly with additional staff, machinery stock, parts and vehicles. Staff will be trained as in accordance with JCB requirements and we aim to be the county’s number one supplier of Telehandlers. The business name John Bownes Ltd is a well-recognised name within the agricultural market. We have a good reputation within the community for buying second-hand tractors, selling new and used tractors and machinery and new tractors supported by a good back up from our parts and service departments. We currently have 24 staff in the company, nearly half of whom are family members all working in different areas of the business. Further information on the history of John Bownes is available from our company secretary, Mrs Sue Langley.

Our aim is to give an even better customer service than at present with some additional focus on the “after sales“ part of the business. We will be offering some extended warranties and fixed service costs for new tractors or telehandlers, so the customer will know what their fixed running costs are likely to be. This will also increase the part exchange value of the tractor with a comprehensive service record enhancing the resale price.

Valtra Tractors The past two years have seen the successful introduction of the “T” series (6 cylinder) and the”N” series (4 cylinder) range of tractors, which have certainly earned respect from both existing and new Valtra customers. The tractors are reliable, economical and now a serious contender with the high profile competitive mages in the UK. This has certainly helped us to increase our sales – year on year and have won- over several “competitive” users. We now supply approximately 10% of all the Valtra tractors sold in the UK and always have a good stock of both new and used models available. New Machinery Did you know that with tractors aside, nearly a quarter of our turnover is attributed to new and used machinery sales? We are supplying both quality and cost effective machinery to most markets including Forestry Contractors, County Councils, Equine Centres, Amenity Contractors, Gamekeepers, Private Estates, Agric Colleges, Rural Enterprises and (of course) Farmers and Agricultural Contractors.
So please, why not give us a try and see what the fuss is about? We are sure you will be pleasantly surprised. Our main dealers are: Amazone, Krone, Honda, Richard Western, Spearhead, Sumo – Good stocks and competitive prices on Browns, Fleming, Foster, Marshall, NC, Quickie and Major equipment. Our contact list is at the back of this brochure.

JOHN BOWNES STORES HISTORY A s the stores department at John Bownes Ltd prepares to get ready for 2017 and all the new changes that are about to happen we take a moment to reflect back over the years that helped us get where we are today. Our first stores department was created at Springfield Yard and consisted of a small part of a shed between the workshop of the offices. The stock we carried in those days only amounted to a few thousand pounds and the parts stock control system consisted of a few hand written stock cards with an annual stock check done once a year and added up on a calculator. As the years went by and the company took on more franchises the need for a bigger stores department soon became apparent. Plans were put into place to develop a part of the showroom and create a new purpose built parts department, new shelving, a parts counter, new stock, lighting, heating and an office. The company eventually completely outgrew the whole site at Springfield Yard and a move to Court House Farm in 2000 saw the second parts department being created. This time even bigger stocking the range of parts to back up the tractors and machines that we sell to help meet our customers’ needs. New technology has also been a major part of the parts department, no more hand written records, invoices or account records it’s all on computer now and a good job too, where as we hand wrote 100 statements we now print around 400. No more orders over the phone or faxing it though – it’s all on line and email. Moving forward into 2017 and beyond the parts department will see changes yet again. We are currently moving some of the parts department into another building for storage purposes so we can create shelf space within the parts shop for new lines which are going to be introduced during the year. The introduction of JCB to the parts department will make a huge change which we are all very excited about. Over the years the parts department has also seen a number of staff come and go with Richard Langley being the longest standing member of staff. Geoff Hulmes joined us in 2001 and in December 2016 Geoff retired after being with us for 15 years and we all wished him well in his retirement. Geoff was the first member of staff to retire from John Bownes Ltd.

JOHN BOWNES LTD added the Solis range of “budget” Tractors to their portfolio in 2016. “Whilst we still sell a good number of the traditional used scraper tractors every year, there seemed to be a general shortage of the typical 45-60 HP models required“ says Steve Lewis of John Bownes. “This is probably due to the fact that fewer new small tractors being sold over the past decade and there has generally been a good trade for export. The very tidy models are also fetching good prices from classic collectors.” After searching the market, the specification and quality of The SOLIS tractor fitted in with our requirements and is now very much part of the JOHN BOWNES portfolio. The SOLIS 50-2wd has been a good working tractor in the Dairy sector and has proved to be both a reliable and cost effective model.

SOLIS is the brand name of International Tractors Limited – the company was founded in 1969 and started producing tractors in 1995. They are the number 2 brand in India making 250 tractors every day with 80% of them being for the export market. When their new manufacturing plant is opened it will be able to produce upwards of 400 tractors a day. Known for their simplicity, strength and fuel economy in 75 countries across the world, they are now starting to make their presence felt in the UK. Current models include 20,26,50,60.75 and 90 with some exciting new models being launched in the near future. Also part of the Smart Hydraulics package are end- of-stroke damping on boom lift and retraction, and a new ‘auto’ mode for the boom’s

Smooth Ride System (SRS). The Bucket Control System eliminates the need for an operator to make repeated joystick movements, while changing attachments is also easier thanks to auxiliary hydraulics venting, operated by a button in the cab. Superior engine and drivetrain. 2 The side-mounted JCB EcoMAX engine works in perfect harmony with JCB axles and transmission; in short, you get a reliable, efficient drivetrain performance from tried and trusted components. Formidable strength. 3 Loadall booms are mounted low in the chassis, which means the structure is extremely rigid and over- the-shoulder visibility is maximised. A comfortable operator environment. 4 We’ve made sure that the controls on our latest AGRI telehandlers are ergonomically positioned. There’s also the option of air conditioning for optimum comfort.

V altra, a leader in tractors started life as Valmet, (from Valtion Metallitetaat – State Metal Works) part of a conglomerate owned by the Finnish State. Production, based near Jyvaskula, commenced after WWII and in late 1969 Valmet moved to Suolahti where it remains today. Valmet researched and manufactured most of the tractor including engines and transmissions, incorporating a high level of innovation. Valmet was the first tractor manufacturer to introduce a fully integral cab, the Valmet 900. First with synchromesh transmissions in six cylinder turbocharged engined tractors - which also boasted a cab radio back in the 1960s. First to introduce a factory fitted reverse drive system and, more recently, Sigma Power, CareTel and a range of colours. During the 1960s Valmet also sold proprietary equipment: ploughs, mowers, forage harvesters back-hoes and more. This badged machinery was named Valtra, from Valmet Trading. The company grew, concentrating on the Nordic countries, and overseas territories not much bothered with by competitors: Vietnam and Thailand amongst others, a scheme that bore fruit. Valmet was also

successful in Brazil and when, in the late 1950s, that country decided on a home manufacture policy Valmet succeeded in the tender process. The Sao Paulo factory, where production commenced in 1960, remains, like Suolahti growing successfully. In the mid 1990s, the Finnish Government reorganised its businesses. In doing this Valmet tractors became Sisu Valmet (The company name changed to Sisu Tractors Inc.) with the long term aim to call the company Valtra, a shortened version of Valmet Trading and Valmet Tractors. Valmet range, first introduced into the UK through importers, was not sufficiently diverse for large arable farms. Smaller dairy farmers were without the capital for new tractors, although those that did find the cash became converts. Ownership costs were lower than many marques thanks to high reliability levels. In 1992, Valmet was relaunched in the UK under the Finnish factory banner, removing one level of profit taking. Steadily the range built a reputation for ruggedness and reliability with stock farmers and smaller arable farmers the main customers for the still rather limited but expanding range.

Today Valtra, a division of AGCO specialising in the manufacture of agricultural machinery, has a range of tractors from 50hp to 400hp. The A Series has three orchard and compact models available with or without a cab at 50hp, 68hp and 78hp with hydraulic outputs of 43 l/min. Above this are two cabbed tractors at 88hp and 101hp with engine torques of 325Nm and 370 Nm and 52 l/min hydraulic output. Next the N Series. Six models from 115hp to 185hp and 510Nm to 730Nm. The smaller models are available with HiTech Five transmissions while the three larger models also boast Active, Versu or Direct transmissions. Direct is a CVT system developed by Valtra as indeed are the manual Versu and Active systems. Sharing a similar design of cab, much acclaimed throughout Europe, is the prize- winning six model six cylinder T Series. Ranging from 170hp to 250hp with engine

torques up to 1000Nm., all are available with Active, Versu and Direct transmissions.

At the top of the line are the five S Series from 270hp to 400hp (1220 to 1600Nm torque). These machines are only available with a CVT transmission, ideal for large farms and contractors. The N and T Series include important Eco models. Their engines speeds can be altered at the touch of a switch: 1750rpm instead of 1900rpm (N114e HiTech) or1700rpm instead of 1900rpm (T174 all models). These reduced engine speeds have many advantages: reduced fuel consumption (and therefore pollutants). Wear and noise down. Service intervals in real time increased. (Therefore cost of ownership is decreased.) Whatever your requirements there will be a tractor in the Valtra range to meet your requirements. Just talk to John Bownes Ltd to find out how.

THE EXCITING NEW PARTNERSHIP IN CHESHIRE!

“With their expert knowledge of the agricultural industry combined with their positive attitude , we are looking forward to working with JOHN BOWNES LTD in Cheshire to promote our agricultural range” stated Matthew Mulligan, territory sales manager for JCB.

Growing productivity on the farm. JCB has a strong heritage in farming going back to 1945, when Joseph Cyril Bamford (Mr JCB) built his first farm trailer. That’s why JCB have such a strong understanding of the industry and realise that when it comes to agricultural machinery, only the highest levels of performance and productivity will do. It’s also why JCB have an ongoing commitment to investing in and developing specialised farm machines that meet your ever changing needs. Machines like JCB’s agricultural Loadalls, introduced back in 1977, JCB’s agricultural wheeled loaders in 1983 and the world’s fastest production tractor, the Fastrac in 1991. It’s still the world’s only fully suspended, high draft tractor capable of 80kph. JCB also believe strongly in using innovation and technology to make JCB equipment as efficient as possible. In 2006 JCB introduced TorqueLock to

reduce fuel consumption and increase top speeds. In 2010 JCB patented Adaptive Load Control to improve safety and stability on our telescopic machines. 2012 saw the introduction of the JCB EcoMAX engine, a revolutionary and award-winning unit seen in many JCB machines including the Agri Loadalls. It meets today ’s stringent legislation without the need for a DPF or DOC and leads to fuel savings of up to 10%. More recently JCB have introduced several innovations that help take productivity and efficiency to even greater levels. They include LiveLink, our state-of-the art telematics system, JCB DualTech Variable Transmission, Smart Hydraulics, Auto Smooth Ride, Activ Traction and hydrostatic dual steering. JCB have continued to enhance the range with innovative machines such as the 4000 and 8000 series Fastracs, the AGRI Pro Loadall and the highly manoeuvrable 403 compact wheel loader.
