Demonstrated excellence in mentoring students and post-doctoral trainees is evidenced by trainees obtaining federally funded fellowships, by serving as mentor on others' mentored research grants, by receiving local or national mentorship awards, by teaching workshops on mentorship, or through letters of support from current or past trainees whom the candidate has mentored. Establishment and/or leadership of research training grants also serves as strong evidence of achievement by the candidate in mentoring. Service For tenure to be granted, there must be significant contributions in service and/or administration. These contributions include participation in committees within the department, college and/or university. They also may include participation in federal grant proposal review panels, professional societies, editorial boards, program committees, and governing boards. In addition, substantial service in the form of essential components to team science (i.e. core technologies) and/or leadership roles in building programs and centers may contribute substantially to a candidate’s consideration for a tenure appointment.
