This great enemy, Satan, is very subtle. He longs to gain an entrance to the tem ple of the soul. Through the gate called “Hearing,” he often tries to enter by means of a naughty story. Through the gate called “Tasting,” he has entered many a temple by just one taste of something harmful. He tries to get possession of the lips of boys and girls, causing them to say unkind and untrue things. He has tried to cause boys and girls to listen just once to something displeasing to the Lord. Oh, dear children, do keep the gates to your temples well guarded! But, you say, where are we to find a guard stronger than this terrible enemy? God’s Word gives us the secret. The Lord Jesus Christ has won the victory over this dreadful enemy. Satan is a conquered foe. When the Lord Jesus died on the cross, Satan’s doom was sealed. Let the Lord Jesus come into your heart! Receive Him as your Saviour. Then your body will become His temple. Let Him take full possession now, at the begin ning of this new year. He will be the strong guard of every gate. You will be safe and secure, trusting and resting in Him, not only throughout this year, but also every year of your life. N-ow is the accepted day E-ven in thy youth, W-alk, then, where He leads the way. Y-ou are Jesus’ boys and girls, E-ven though you’re small; A-lways keep your eyes on Him, R-eady for His call. — E t h e l L ee . Dear boys and girls, Again we are greeting each other with the cheering words, “Happy New Year.” And we are hearing friends say such things as these: “I have made a new reso lution,” or, “I have turned over a new leaf.” Did you ever make a long list of New Year’s resolutions, and keep them perfectly during the first week of the new year, but finally forget them all? Resolutions made in one’s own strength are apt to prove failures. Of ourselves, we are weak, but the Lord Jesus is strong and able to help us. Ask Him to help you to do the things you should. Philippians 4:13 says, “I can do all things through Christ which strengthened me.” As for “turning .over a new leaf”’— what about all the “pages” that have gone before, full of mistakes and failures? When one accepts the Lord Jesus as Sav iour, all of one’s sins are forgiven—re moved “as far as the east is from the west.” “Turning over a new leaf” will never rid one of sins and mistakes, but the blood of Jesus Christ will. “And the blood of Jesus Christ his Son, cleanseth us from all sin” (1 John 1:7). Begin the New Year with Him. Re ceive the Lord Jesus as your own Saviour, then keep looking unto Him for strength to do the things that He would have you do. Lovingly, Your Junior Editor. A New Year’s Guide Standing on the threshold of a new year is like beginning a long, long jour ney over a strange and untraveled road. Missionaries, when traveling to their stations in foreign lands, always want a reliable guide to accompany them. Moun tain resorts also usually furnish efficient guides who are available to take parties over strange trails. Have you ever been on such a trip with a guide? If so, you will remember how safe you felt, though in a strange place, because you were trusting the one who knew the way. As we begin to travel the road that leads through the year 1934, how important it is that we have a Guide—One who has gone before, who will be our constant Com panion, in whom we can safely trust! There is only One, boys and girls, who can qualify, and that One is the Lord Jesus Himself. Like a tender Shepherd, He leads His own all the way. “When he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before” (John 10:4). He has promised, “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee” (Heb. 13:5). Though there may be many dangers await ing us along the way, why should we fear with such a Guide! “Be not afraid, . . . for the Lord thy God is with thee whither soever thou goest” (Josh. 1:9). This 1934 road may be the last part of our earthly journey. It may prove to be the road that leads to the heavenly home where we will see our Guide, the. Lord Jesus, face to face, for we are looking for Him to come soon (1 Thess. 4:13-18). How glorious it would be if His coming to take us with Him should be the road that leads Home! To have the Lord Jesus as our Guide, we must believe on Him as Saviour. He died on the cross, in order that He might be not only our Saviour from sin, but also our Guide all the way to the heavenly home. Choose Him now, boys and girls, as your Saviour and Guide, before you begin your 1934 journey! “Him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out” (John 6:37).

Scripture A lphabet or Memory Work How many letters are there in the alpha bet? “Twenty-six,” you will say. Would you like to learn a verse of Scripture for each letter in the alphabet? Begin the New Year by memorizing at least one verse from God’s Word each week—a verse for each letter of the alphabet. At the end of twenty-six weeks, how rich you will be in the Word! Here are a few with which to begin: “A -ll we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all” (Isa. 53:6). “B-ut as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name” (John 1:12). “C-ome unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matt. 11:28). “D -raw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you” (Jas. 4:8). Bible Drill Copy the following questions and an swers in your notebooks and memorize them. Recite them to your Sunday-school teacher or your parents. A K.Y.B. Club
