FEBRUARY 10 Strong in th e Lord

“Thy shoes shall be iron and brass; and as thy days, so shall thy strength be’’ (Deut. 33:25). In the room of a friend of mine there is this motto: “Today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday.” Each day brings its duty to be done, its temptation to be met and conquered, its burden to be car ried, and its progress to be made heaven ward. There are three hundred and sixty- five days in every year, but really there is only one working day, and that is today. Sufficient to each day is the evil thereof. . . . God means to shut you up to this style of thinking and planning and doing when He makes His gracious promise, “As thy days, so shall thy strength be.” . . . God never made a Christian strong enough to stand the strain of this day’s duties, and all the load of one’s anxieties piled upon the top of them. “Strength for today is all we need, For we never shall see tomorrow; When it comes, tomorrow will be today With its measure of joy or sorrow.” Bai-SELECTED. “Seek that ye may excel” (1-Cor. 14:12). An almost startling command! Yet it is addressed to “all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord,” therefore unmistakably to ourselves. We have perhaps been thinking it was useless to seek to excel, because we saw no likeli hood of doing so ; that it was presumptuous to think of such a thing; that it was even positively wrong to aim at it; yet, all the time, there the commandment stood, “Seek that ye may excel” ! It is only when we are coveting earnestly “the best gifts” that the exercise and development of all others come in their right place. . . Per haps He grants us power to excel in some seemingly very little things, some little peculiar gifts which we do not think much of. “He that is faithful in that which is least” will be enabled to use even that for the edifying of some part of the church. Those who have no hand in raising the strong pillars may yet be called to give a delicate touch to the lily work which shall crown them.— F rances R idley H avergal . "Ye shall ask in my name” (John 16:26). When we ask in His name we ask first for His sake, and second, as in His per son. And such desires, resting their hopes of answer solely upon His mighty sacri fice and all-sufficient merit, and shaped accurately and fully after the pattern of the wishes that are dear to His heart, are to be the prerogative and the joy of His servants. Each new influx and tidal wave of knowledge of the Father, which Christ gives to His waiting child, leads on to en larged desires, to longings to press still farther into the unexplored mysteries of that magnificent and boundless land, and to nestle still closer into the infinite heart of God. . . . Thus aspiration and fru ition, longing and satisfaction in unsatiated and inexhaustible and unwearying alter nation, are the two blessed poles between which the life of a Christian may revolve in smoothness and music. ^ » --A lexander M aclaren .
