FEBRUARY 13 V ictory on H oly Ground “As captain of the host of the Lord am I now come” (josh. 5:14). Is there any emphasis upon the “now” ? Probably! The Guide by the way has come now as the Captain of the host. The faithful servant discerns the Commander, and takes his true place at once. The nar rative is significantly brief. “Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so” (Josh. 5:15). Oh, for such prompt, obedient faith as this! Faith discerns, faith obeys, faith gets the reward, at once. “I have given into thy hand Jericho . . . and the mighty men of valor” (Josh. 6:2). “I have given.” It is done. The impossible thing is virtually accomplished before a blow is struck. . . . “Be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might” (Eph. 6:10). That is your conquering place, your hoped-for victori ous position, believer. Be still—put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the ground on which thou standest is holy. Let your eye be watchful, your faith unwavering, your hopes steady, your heart humble. There is your fighting ground, and there will be your victory. —H enry F. B owker . Insufficient ? All-sufficient! These two words form the complement, of each other, and together give the key to an efficient Christian life. The discovery and full conviction of our helplessness is the con stant condition of spiritual supply. The aim of the Old Testament, therefore, is ever to show man’s failures; that of the New, to reveal Christ’s sufficiency. He has all things for us, but we cannot receive them till we know that we have nothing. The very essence, therefore, of Christian perfection is the constant renunciation of our own perfection and the continual acceptance of Christ’s righteousness. —A. B. S impson . I am so needy, Lord, and yet I know All fullness dwells in Thee; And hour by hour that never-failing treasure Supplies and fills in overflowing measure My least, my greatest need, and so Thy grace is enough for me. —S elected . "And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, . . . and he smote Peter on the side, . . . saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands” (Acts 12:7). Ah, servant of the most high God, Between two soldiers sleeping In peace serene, thou knowest well Thy God a watch is keeping. Naught can befall but His blest will, So, Peter, sleep, He reigneth still. Deliv’rance speeds its way to thee, Thy chains and shackles rending, . What strength have gates, or prison bars, ’Gainst help that God is sending? The iron doors roll back for thee, Rejoice, for God has set thee free! Perhaps, _thou, too, O child of God, Angelic aid art needing, FEBRUARY 14 When W eakness is Strength “Not that we are sufficient of ourselves tc think any thing as of ourselves” (2 Cor. 3:5). This study throws the searchlight of God’s Word on the subject.
