Fear not, for He has .heard thy pray’r, The Lord Himself is heeding. Through all that bars, He makes a way, And prison doors His will obey. — A l ic e E. S herw ood . FEBRUARY 16 A Peculiar People “Ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar peo plef’ (1 Pet. 2:9). Christ died that He might make us a “peculiar people.” A great many Chris tians are afraid that they will be peculiar. A few weeks before Enoch was translated, his acquaintances would probably have said he was a little peculiar; he was very peculiar, very. We are not told that he was anything that the world would call great, but he walked with God three hun dred and sixty-five years, and he is the brightest star that shone in that dispensa tion. . . . I suppose that if you had asked the men in Elijah’s time what kind of a man he was, they would have said, “He is very peculiar.” The king would have said, “I hate him.” Jezebel did not like him; the whole royal court did not like him, and a great many of the nominal Chris tians did not like him; he was too radical. I am glad that the Lord has seven thou sand that had not bowed the knee to Baal; but I would rather have Elijah’s little finger than the whole seven thousand. I would not give much for seven thousand Christians in hiding.—D. L. M oody . FEBRUARY 17 When th e Spirit is in Control "Be filled with the Spirit’’ (Eph. 5:18). There is a lesson writ large on every page of the Bible, that not upon revelations or emotional experiences, but upon the moral and spiritual life, turns the approval of our Father. . . . We are commanded in Ephesians 5 :18 to be filled with the Spirit; but that command is no isolated one, it stands in the midst of many prac tical injunctions; and when these are car ried out, then that command also may be taken to be complied with. Where we are strong in the Lord, and careful to wear His armor, there it may be accepted humbly but hopefully, that the Holy Ghost is the pervading power of the life, that we are filled with the Spirit.— J . B. F ig g is . Some of our readers will perhaps re member Mark Guy Pearse’s beautiful par able of the distressed city with its needy inmates, and the palace on the hilltop which contained everything the distressed ones needed. Within the palace were sil ver and gold, stores of brotherly love, power for the healing of the nations and the casting out of devils, gifts of peace and hope and purity, joy for the sad, health for the sick, and life for the dead. But the gate was locked, and Pity was in despair until he remembered that there had once been put into his hand that which would have opened every door and put him in possession of every treasure. He had thrown this lightly aside as a piece of rusty iron, but he remembered that on the rusty iron was engraved— “All goeth right when I am bright." Recovering what was really the master-key, he found that by its use all the wealth of the palace was placed at his disposal. That master-key is prayer, and by its use all the riches of God are ours. What are we doing with it? —J. G. M. FEBRUARY 18 T he Master-Key "Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you” (Matt. 7:7).

FEBRUARY 19 When the Bird Stopped Struggling "Nevertheless, not my will, but thine, be done” (Lk. 22:42). Wordsworth, in one of his poems, tells about a bird that was carried from Nor way by a storm. It fought hard against the gale in its effort to win its way back to Norway, but all in vain. At last it yielded to the wind, and instead of being carried to destruction it was borne to the warm shores of England, to the green meadows and forests. So when we try to fight against God’s will, we are making efforts which will come to naught, and are doing so to our own injury and loss. But if we willingly accept God’s will, it will be for our good; we shall be borne on to blessedness and joy. — J o h n T. M ontgom ery . FEBRUARY 20 When the Master-Spirit Sets Free “Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty" (2 Cor. 3:17). When I am a pupil af school, I begin by learning rules; but when I have mastered the science, I forget the rules. I no longer think of my scales and exercises; I no longer think of my stops and intervals; these belonged to the days of law, but I am now under grace. The Master-Spirit has set me f r ee —not free f r om the law but free in it . . . O divine Spirit, Thy love is the music of my religion; it puts me in the spirit of it. I no longer need to learn the separate notes of duty; I can play by the ear; I can improvise. I no longer count the number of times I shall forgive; my every act of forgiveness is for eternity. I no longer ask, “Am I com manded to follow Thee?” I say, “Lord, suffer me to go.” Thy will is my joy; Thy law is my life; Thy service is my glory; Thy cross is my power; Thy com mand is my strength; the constraint of Thy love is my spirit’s liberty. — G eorge M a t h e s o n . V ital Communion "The things which are impossible with men are possible with God" (Lk. 18:27). The impossible can become our achieve ment only through a vital faith in a liv ing Christ. A creedal connection is not a vital communion. A living faith drinks Christ’s blood, yes, drinks Christ’s very life into the soul, and so equips the soul to meet the world and the flesh and the devil with the holy vitality of the Eternal Son of God. — J . H. J ow ett . What can I ask but Thine own Self, dear Lord ? Omniscience and omnipotence are Thine. FEBRUARY 21

FEBRUARY 22 Hom esick for Heaven

“Having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better" (Phil. 1 :23). Homesickness after heaven does not spring in every heart from the same urge. There are those who long after heaven be cause they have become too old for this world. The world no longer interests them, and they no longer interest the world. An other is yet not old, but many things went against him. By bitter losses and grievous sorrow wound upon wound was inflicted
